Got an opinion question. My car was recently inspected and the mileage was accidentally entered into the DMV system with an extra zero. Actual mileage was 58,439 and it was entered as 584,390. All previous documents support the actual mileage and the fact that these cars won't actually record a 6 digit mileage makes it a very obvious error in my opinion. The inspector feels really bad about it and is willing to go above and beyond to correct the problem including going to the regional DMV office with me and the car to explain the error and request a correction. The reality is that it will be a real PITA to correct and I'm wondering if it is worth the effort. What do you guys think? If you were going to buy a car and it was obviously a good condition car with one clear error in the records, would it be a problem for you? Trying to figure out what to do.

Do what ever you can to get that correction done.
the second you want to sell, The first thing that will pop up will be a tampered speedometer and most potential buyers will run for cover, the one that stay will low ball you.
GET IT FIXED if possible.

Yup I agree, get it fixed so that if/when you sell it, you won't have red flags all over a car fax for the mileage discrepancy.

Yep. Fix it or it will forever be on record as "unknown mileage"

Had the same problem, emissions tested my GN when I first got it in 1995 with 4700 miles. They put down that it had 104,700 miles since it was such an "old" car. Didn't realize it until I got home. Now the car has about 38,000 miles 20 years later but anyone looking at a carfax will see it as having 100,000 more miles than it has. Would rather see it in your situation with over 500,000 miles though. Don't think one of our TR's would ever make it that far!

good luck, my car has 61,000 mi, I'm second owner, and bought it from my buddy who was 1st owner, have known the car since new, car fraud says 161,000, and will not correct the error, one look at the car tells you its NOT 161k,

My opinion is that unless it is a sub 20k mile car I wouldn't worry about it much. It seems that after that condition is far more important than the miles as far as value. At this point the cars are old so how they have been cared for and/or modded means more to most buyers I would think.
