Looking at buying a 84 rolling chassis. Wanted to know if there is anything special i needed to do to put 87 motor in it. I want to upgrade it too, like bigger turbo, inj., intercooler, etc. Also wanted to know how to convert a hydroboost to vaccum like one of the other threads was talking about. Thanks for any help.

ECM is different, i believe electric fans too. Brakes are different as well, you'll definatly want to get rid of the crappy hydroboost.

my hydroboosy was better than the damn vaccuum, oh and the wiring harness is different, either get the 87 harness or be ready to spend a weekend rewiring it

Don't knock hydroboost

I would have to agree that hydroboost is not that bad a setup. Very few problems for me after I got the hoses set up. Superior to powermaster, only complaint is don't have an engine stall during braking! I often wondered if one of the the truck systems with an accumulator could be adapted...

Just going off of what I've heard. Pretty muchly everyone I know with an 84 says they hated the hydroboost.

The only bad thing about the hydroboost is if the unit starts leaking at the firewall. It can put ps fluid onto your driverside carept and floor pan. Makes a REALLY big mess.

when you put the 87 motor in there is no room for the 84 power steering pump since all of the acessories are on the other side than the 84 engine with my 84 i just converted to vacuum with parts from an 87 monte carlo ss you will need the following: pedal booster master cylinder porportioning valve and lines from the master to the valve and sell all of the hydroboost stuff for 75.00 that is what i did.

hydroboost

Come on guys, I have absolutely no trouble with my setup. It can't be all that bad. Like I said before, if you can live with it, it's yours!

If your hydroboost setup leaks at the firewall like mine, then it isn't always a bad thing! It was the only thing that kept the drivers side floor boards from rusting out! hehe The passenger side is another story!

I want to thank all you guys for the valuable info. This is gonna help point me in the right direction. The wiring on this car is pretty hacked, so Im looking at a new hareness anyways. So far it seems vaccum brakes is the way to go too. Now all i have to do is find a engine and trans to build up for this project.

I placed an 87 drive train in my 84 T-type. I also kept my hydroboost and my 84 ECM and wirning harness. The hydroboost was 20 years old before I had to change the master cylinder. The booster is still running strong. Thats a lot more than I can say for the power master system in my 87. I am using the 87 power steering pump in much the same way the original 84 pump was used with the hydroboost. Yes there was some work in getting the harness work on the 87 engine. I did eventually find a used 87 harness and ECM used. I would recommend using an 87 ECM. Only because most chips are written with the 87 in mind. Power will need to be wired over to the fan relays because the stock 84 fire wall fuse terminal block does not have the connections in fire wall connector to source power to the fan relays. You will have to find a new home for your fuel filter. Depending on the shape/curve of our transmission dip stick tube you may need to replace the tube and dip stick also. Your AC lines change. Your radiator will not have the oil cooler. You will need a power steering resivour and bracket. I believe I had to replace the throttle cable. You'll need an electric fan, new down pipe, water hoses, heater core, nearly all the engine sensors, coil pak, ignition module, air dams under the bumper, alternator, plug wires, brackets to hold the 87 harness against the heater/AC box. There more but this is all that I can think of right now.

I'm sure as your project moves on you'll find the items that I forgot to mention.

Keep the hydroboost. It has much better pedal feel than vacuum or powerdisaster systems. Mine has been 100% reliable even after 20 years. Don't convert unless you like doing extra work for no reason. Vacuum brakes are not an upgrade.

I too have been wondering if you can bolt on the hydroboost with accumulator from a diesel. I guess I'll try it if mine ever goes out (not likely).

Will a 87 harness plug into the 84 firewall? You said i will have to run power to the fans. So i just wire those like after market fans? Hydroboost sound like the way to go even though the are getting harder to find. Why a new heater core. Looking at also fibergalss bumpers. The harness is hacked anyways and the computer is missing so I am going to need on of those too.

The heater core connectiion points are pointed in the wrong direction to connect the heater tubes on the 87 engine. The 87 harness connects right up the the 84 fire wall connector. You can get the 24vdc source for the fans from the alternator. Make sure you use a inline fuse like those given with the hot wire fuel pump kits. The fuse should be sized to protect the weakest link. Usually the wire. When you connect the power steering pump to the reservoir make sure the hose is of the type that will not get sucked closed. With the hydroboost system you are going to have two power steering fluid returns. One return from the power steering and one from the brake booster. You can use a 3/8" nylon "Y" connector to join the two together and then bring the one tube back to the power steering fluid reservoir. Along with the reservoir you will need the mounting bracket. The pressure hose that is located on the power steering gear will connect to the 87 style pump but you will need to take some of the bend out of the steel tubeing on the pump side of the hose. Be gentle with the tube as it will collapse quit easily. Purchase a good tube bender.

24vdc will need to be run from the alternator back to either the battery or the starter. I ran mine back to the starter. Use at least 10awg with a inline fuse. You can fuse it at 50amps depending on the type of wire you use. If you know someone that can crimp 6awg wire that would be best. Use split loom when running the wire. You do not want this wire to short out as one end is connected to a 120amp alternator and the other end is connected to the battery. Easy place for an electrical fire to start.

Seeing as the engine is missing, should i get a new complete hareness like the one from Jays GN??

A used one is just as good if you do not mind replaceing some of the connectors. If you want a new one that good too.

if you get a used harness, be sure to check the wire before the connectors. This is a bad wear spot on the wires. I've pulled and/or butchered 2 harnesses now, this is where they flake out. Go down to the salvage yard and grab a few connectors, they'll probably give ya a handfull for a fiver. I've got a CTS sensor connector's wires that are bad  may just get a bit of heat shrink tubing on each of the wires since I've gotta extend it anyways. If you have to make repairs, use solder and heat shrink or liquid electrical tape. Don't half ass the job, it'll run like an OE harnees.

Whatever you do, invest $10 in weather-pak & metri-pak pin tools. This will allow you to pull the terminal blocks apart without hacking the harness: Waytek

The suggested idea of using the liquid electrical tape is a good idea. Coat the connection (I usually use two coats), then while it is still tacky pull the heat shrink over it. That connection will never see any moisture.

Casper's wiring harness...

I think that Casper's make a wiring harness specifically made for that application...It's worth checking!...:)
