Mother Nature once again spoiled what could have been another record-breaking field in the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway but not before some astonishing performances were recorded in the brief eighty-three minutes of racing which were squeezed in before a massive storm front moved to within a mile of the track forcing GIR officials to cancel the event. Although rain never hit the track, track manager Jason Dukes made the call to halt racing when lightning in the area became intense enough to warrant concern for the track‘s electronics and lighting systems. The decision was understandable in light of more than $150,000 in damages incurred by the track in three separate lightning storms in the past two seasons.

The cancellation of the event effectively locked up the 2007 SCSS Season Championship for the year’s most dominant driver, Tim “Moose” Mallicoat. The Collinsville, Illinois racer entered the event with a seven-point lead over rival Ray Arthur who now can only earn a maximum of six points in the final three events of the season. Mallicoat’s naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch ‘68 Camaro has won a record fifteen weekly titles in 2007 while clocking a best of 8.60 seconds at 158.52 miles per hour. The black M&M Automotive-sponsored Chevy was qualified second, (8.70/155.29), at the time of the event’s end behind a brutal 8.63/159.38 pass by the only driver to ever defeat Mallicoat in SCSS competition, Steven Gentry, in his 557-inch nitrous oxide-aided ‘65 Mercury Comet. Matt Bell, who last week reset the SCSS Speed Record to 165.11 mph with his turbocharged 359-inch ‘93 Mustang, was third with a 9.08/164.13 blast and Arthur’s “Suspicion” 496-inch ’67 Camaro held the fourth position with a tremendous 9.23/145.47...a career-best by almost three tenths of a second and three miles per hour!

Although only fifty-eight minutes of actually qualifying was completed, the race was marked by a new SCSS Track Record for Diesel Trucks set by Chris Calkins, whose turbocharged 6.6-litre LB7 DuraMax-powered 1970 Chevy C-10 rocketed to a nearly unbelievable 9.87 at an equally incredible 139.41 mph!. Calkins led qualifying for the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown over Kevin Autenreith’s 434-inch smallblock ’91 S-10, (10.36/131.14), and James Blum’s 2003 Ford Lightning, (13.83/104.48), when the event was called. Multi-event titlist Allen Hannel, at the wheel of Hal Marshall’s white ’86 S-10, had suffered a destroyed transmission on his only qualifying run.

Adnan “Otto” Omerovic’s SCSS Record-holding All-Wheel-Drive ’95 Eagle Talon was atop the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown when qualifying ceased with an off-pace 11.74 at 136.12 mph ahead of John King’s Vienna, Missouri-based ’05 Neon SRT-4, (14.29/99.82).

Under Gateway International Raceway policies, the event was cancelled within two hours of the first run of the event and, therefore, all competitors and spectators were issued rain checks and no qualifying points were awarded.

Bret,
Watch out!! I'll have my car out there next year with a totally new stroker motor and turbo. I'm shooting for a 9 sec pass at 140+. ;) Thats why i haven't been out there this year.

Rob Nolan

Good to hear that, Rob!

We've wondered where you were this year. We figured you'd at least be out to run your "annual" 11.041! ;)

I was hoping to come out and run this year. You are right on the 11.041 that i kept on running. The car had alot more in it, but the tune was way off. These Buicks can be a pain to tune. I am learning all the time of what i was doing wrong when i was tuning the car. With the combo i had, the car had a easy 10.50 pass in it. I'll come out there before the season is over with and watch everybody drag race and say HI to ya!!
Take Care,
Rob
