A neighbor of mine has an '85 T-Type, with a newly rebuilt eng, and he cant get it started and he asked me if I could ask you guys if any of you could help, he's willing to pay for the help. Let me know and I can get ahold of him. Thanks,Rob

I assume it cranks? Did he check fuel pressure and if the pump is on? Spark? Fuses? Orange wire for ECM at battery?

i dont know the details, but it seems like it doesnt have spark, he said it has fuel, he changed the crank sensor, set the cam sensor, and still wont start. it also has a coil pack/ module conversion done by him. I cheked the ecm wire that was ok, just gotta check the fuses. I dont have much time

Did he line up the crank sensor properly? Did he plug it in? Also try to put the original coil/ignition module back.

i would assume he plugged it in, but i didnt check. as far as lining it up correctly he followed the procedure on GNTTPE , the crank sensor is the new replacement type with the new bracket. (genuine GM) i dont know about the coil pack and module, though.

Rob,

How did he set the cam sensor? Did he use a cam sensor setting tool? (little box with an LED that plugs into the cam sensor harness) When I was firing up my first TR rebuild, it would crank and crank until I got the cam sensor set correctly. Let me know if he needs to borrow the tool.

Aloha,

Did he check the spark?

Just wondering if he checked to make sure he had a spark. This is pretty easy. either just disconnect a plug wire from the coil pack and crank it over. You will hear and see the arc from the terminal down to a ground on the coil pack. I wouldn't keep doing it, but that will tell you if it's firing. I think I would suspect the coil pack conversion first. I've gone through this a LOT during my rebuilds. The DAMN cam sensor is the biggest PITA. But if he has a multimeter it can be done. Go 25 degrees past TDC and just set it. Ask the stupid question (as I screwed it up MULTIPLE times, but I blame alcohol for it. ;) ) did he adjust the cam sensor rotating it in the right direction? I think (going on long term memory here) your supposed to turn it counter-clockwise until voltage goes from 5v-0v or vice versa (don't remember). A FEW times I went clockwise vice counter clockwise and the motor will NOT start. Does he have any codes stored in the ECM??? That may also help to find the culprit. Any new mods that could have something to do with it?

Trying to help,
Derrick

If it's not too far away I may be able to bring my car over to have a template to take readings from, but I don't have the stock ECM in mine so that may change some things.....

like i said he followed the instructions on GNTTYPE but i wasnt there so i dont know for sure what he did, but he said he did so i assume he did it correctly. I also suspect the coil pack conversion. but time is limited for a while so i really dont have time to check. note: he did say he was willing to PAY for the help. if anyone is interested, let me know. Rob

Rob,

Where is the car located? I have some time on Saturday afternoon to go look at it. Maybe around 4 p.m. I'll try to remember to bring my cam sensor setting tool. No charge. (maybe just plate lunch):D

Aloha,
