Long story short, I bought a used HP laptop from a buddy that doesn't like DirectScan. After doing some research, I've learned that USB to parallel adapters are worthless (unless using it for it's intended purpose of a printer). So I found this discussion about a PCMCIA card that will likely work (that's the "thick" credit card sized things that go in the side of a laptop).
I received it a few minutes ago and am happy to say that, so long as I use the DS dongle, it works great.
For any of you interested in getting one, look here: Amazon.com: PARALLEL PCMCIA CARD, 1 PORT EPP: Electronics
About $100 shipped. 365USA is in California, if that helps your decision.
Hope this helps some of you out!
Caveat emptor: This is the only card that I've tried. There are cheaper ones, but I can't vouch if they'll work or not. Also, this does not work in Dos. You must boot into (say) Win 98 and launch DS that way. I'm working on seeing if I can get it to run via Linux instead.
