A wire into an air filter?

Just installed a 9" K&N filter and a 3" mass air pipe. The old setup was stock with a smaller K&N. Now, there was a wire screwed into the base of the old filter. There is no hole in the new one. Do I have to drill one in, and what is this wire for, to measure air flow?

Also (stupid question alert) does the arrow that says "air flow" on the sensor point to the turbo (I think so, it has to!) or the filter? Thanks guys!

One wire? If I remember correctly the air temp sensor has two wires and has to be after the filter, I heard of some guys that don't use them in the intake but have it mounted away from the engine where it can read cool air.

And the arrow you're talking must be the MAF, so the arrow should be pointing towards the turbo.

Well, this one was at the neck of the old filter itself. Is this wrong? Is putting a hole in a K&N and sticking a wire into the filter not right? Trying to see where else it would go...

Do you mean a sensor or do you mean a wire?
There should be a sensor with wire attached to it.( MAT )

And where does it go into, the MAF sensor, or the neck of the filter? There is one plug in the sensor already. So with this one, do I have to drill a hole and put it in the filter? There is a wire with a plug on the end of it. It either screws into something or just snaps in.

Sounds like you are talking about the MAT sensor to me. It should have two wires going to it, light brown and black. This is the only thing I can think of that would have been screwed into the neck of your old K&N. I use a 5/8" wood boring bit to drill holes for the MAT sensor when I make my cold air kits. Makes a nice clean hole and the sensor screws into into perfectly. Just be sure you drill the hole away from where the clamp goes.

You can look at my website for pictures also. The black hose up front is just a connector between the two 45° elbows. The MAT sensor is in the black hose. Some put the MAT in the neck of the filter.

Thanks for all the replies guys. So, after looking at the pictures and reading the replies, should I drill a hole into the K&N filter neck? Remember, my setup is a 9" K&N with a 3" mass air pipe.

yup. Make sure it seals and cant draw air and bypass the filter

How is the K&N being mounted to your MAF sensor? My K&N was attached right to it and had the hole or the MAT drilled in the neck of the K&N. In retrospect, I would have bought a short length of 3" pipe and used that as a connector between the K&N and the MAF, installing the MAT sensor in that connector pipe. Reason for this is now I have a cold air kit and I have to shove the pipe way down into the K&N past the hole and it's a struggle.
