My 1987 GN runs very smooth. However, when you push down on the gas extremely hard the car takes off very fast and then the engine pops or coughs or misses for a second or two and then takes off very fast again. I've kept the car original and all the spark plugs work and have replaced the coil pack. Any advice please?

Check: spark plug wires, module, fuel filter, injectors, cam sensor, crank sensor. It could be any of these things. It becomes a hassle when you have this type of problem. I've had them before and once in a while I still get them. This is what you have to deal with on these Buicks from time to time. Good Luck!!!

Careful, you could be lean and near the threshold for headgasket failure. ECM could be pulling timing out, causing the miss/pop to subside, then adding it back in until the next lean condition;knock;retard, etc.

Have you replaced the stock fuel pump? Hotwire?

Mine did that a few times right before the HG failed, it was all stock at that time and I was overboosting due to a crack in the wastegate hose. $650 bill - $.50 piece of hose.
