on my 84, I just noticed that it has an adjustable wastegate. It looks factory to me. Is threaded all the way out. How do I adjust this to get more boost ? Do I just turn it to make it shorter ? How many turns ?

Thanks for your patience guys, I'm still learning. I keep posting questions all the time that might be common sense to you all but not me. Please have patience. Thanks.

There should be two sections to the wastegate rod. It should look like this. http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/images/Adj_wastegate.JPG You should beable to turn the end of the rod clockwise to shorten the rod then pull the entire rod out and connect it back to the nipple on the turbocharger to bring boost levels up. Be careful if you don't have an aftermarket boost gauge as the stock one isn't very accurate and you don't want to blow anything up.

That link/picture is instructions on how to mod a stock non-adjustable WG rod. If he has a replacement adjustable WG then it wont have the two seperate sections with the coupling in between. It will have (1) threaded rod from the WG and a female (threaded) piece on the end w/ hole that attaches to the puck arm on the turbo (exhaust housing/elbow). There will also be a nut that when tightened works as a stop or lock when you have this piece adjusted the way you want on the threaded rod.

Loosen this nut (turn clockwise; towards the WG body) then screw the "female" piece clockwise (towards the WG body). Go in small increments. Adjust 1/2 turn or 1 full turn at a time and see what your boost is at (until you get a better feeling/ ability to judge what your doing). Some say that 1 full turn is = to 1 lb of boost, but I have seen different. When finished adjusting you will notice the rod much stiffer when attaching back to the "puck arm". Remember to tighten the nut (turn counterclockwise; away from the wastegate body).

You may wind up adjusting the WG as far as it can go and still want more boost. If so cut the threaded rod down about 1/4". You will now be able to screw the "female piece" down on the rod more, and thus reach higher boost levels.
