I thoroughly enjoy my Suzuki Burgman 650. If you still got that 4 mile commute it would be perfect for that. I use the Burgman as much as possible but I don't drive in the rain. I always hated that and avoid it like the plague. It's quiet, suprisingly quick and the under seat storage holds alot. Just my opinion.

Man, I can not believe you guys are giving this guy all sorts of machines to get him self killed, He said that he knew nothing about motorcycles, and to me that also take in riding them,, the first thing you need to do is sign up for a motorcycle safety course, then after that you need to do some research on riding and handling of these machines and which one best suits your needs, you do not need to run out and buy a V-Max or a Hayabusa, I would bet your life span would start going the other way in a startling fashion, One must learn to crawl before walking and then the running, I really hope this helps you out to some degree, please do some research on this before taking the plunge.

Umm...he already said that he was signed up for the course...and an 800 Suzi is not a 'busa! Some call it an entry level bike. Not me. I think it is a great everyday bike

As much as I like inline 4's, I'd suggest a Suzuki SV650 (V twin). That's alot of bike for the money and they are light and pretty powerful. Great handler too and very reliable. I second the MSF course. Ride safe and learn to use the front brake as primary.

Rode a '95 Nighthawk 750 last night. First time on a bike in over 2 decades. Felt really nice and managable. Price was decent but it was red. I'd like something in black so I'm going to keep looking.

Thanks for the tips so far!

Jim

okay, here it is. I really appreciate y'alls advice, but I settled on the Nighthawk. It combines the looks and power I was looking for in a first bike.

It's a '95 with 9600 miles on it. It's a little dirty from riding 50 miles in the bed of my pickup in the rain:

It has an aftermarket exhaust and jetting in the carbs. About 10 HP over stock, which is decent. Feels peppy. It's REALLY nice to be back in the saddle.

Thanks again everyone.

Jim

Looks great.

Now go buy a V-max and enjoy it too:biggrin:

What do they call that worthless piece of skin wrapped around a vagina?

Looks great!!

Remember: it's not WHAT you ride, it's THAT you ride!

Keep the rubber on the road and enjoy the ride!

That's a nice bike and the IL4 will serve you well. I see there's also a Vance + Hines 4-1 header on there. Did the prior owner rejet? If not, that really needs to happen. That's a clean example and I think you did well. Great lines and styling for that bike!

I've got an '04 Kawasaki ZRX 1200R and a restored '72 Kawasaki H2 750 2stroke triple. I'm sorting jetting issues/ tuning on the triple since I'm running expansion chambers now.

Get some good gear and wear it at all times. Jacket, full face helmet, gloves, and reinforced riding jeans. New Enough.com is a great site with really good deals on allof this. Don't skimp on the safety aspects. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks! All the suggestions here were great, but I really liked the way the Nighthawk looked.

Your advice on the gear is good - I've been doing some reading and found the ATGATT acronym. There are lots of sad stories that reinforce this idea.

It does have the Vance & Hines pipe and a DynoJet recal jet kit. It's a little choppy when it's cold, but once it's warmed up it runs great.

I have A LOT to learn about the bike itself and riding in general, but that's the fun part.
