My recently purchased 86 GN shifts pretty hard. The seller was completely honest about the trans with his thoughts that it may need a rebuild due to flare up on shifts at WOT but believes it's stock, or unopened.

I haven't driven the car much but the reason I ask about the valve body is because of the hard shifts. I can't imagine that any stock trans would shift as hard as this one does. Especially under light load. The 1-2 under very moderate acceleration is pretty intense. I liken it to my old '01 Lightning that I installed a VB in and the chip had the line pressure turned up a bit. Very hard, crisp shifts.

I'm not complaining about the firmness (I love it actually) but was just trying to get a feel for whether or not it could perhaps have an aftermarket VB installed. It will more than likely need to be pulled and rebuilt due to the flaring so I'd like to know beforehand.

Thanks.

The hard shifts can be from line pressure, accumulators, Servo and many other things. Probably not the valve body. Some of the shift kits raise the part throttle TV pressure Hi causing the part throttle neck snapping shifts. One hint that this is the case. If you apply more throttle (power) the shifts seem to soften some. To throw in a monkey wrench if you still have the stock D-5 converter they also cause the shift to be very hard with a trans that has a shift kit.

Thanks for the info. Good to know for the future.
