Will Alky really make a difference running a stock turbo. Reason I ask is how much much boost can I run with a stock turbo and it still be efficient? Im still learning and I did a search to see a gain with a stock turbo and Alky.

Fastest recorded time on a stock turbo was done on pump gas + alcohol injection.
11.37 At 116.5mph 1.50 60 foot

Boost was 28 PSI 1st gear and down to 22-23 in high gear. The little turbo's run out of steam but 11's have been done by many using a stock turbo.. tuning.. and attention to details.

Be amazed what can be squeezed out of limited parts.

I had a blast with the stock turbo and alky. The thing spooled like mad and made really good power. Night and day difference without the alky. On just 93 octane about 15psi on a 93 chip. On 93 and alky I was running 22psi and a RA108 chip (yes this was MANY years ago).

Should I?

Life of an engine without alk.............
Life of an engine with alky............
Will I still have an engine that lives with the alky upgrade or do I install alky and start saving for a rebuild. This is with a conervative tune and not pushing for every ounce of HP. Right now Im running 14# of boost with no KR.

Life of engine if you drive it normally vs if you constantly race it?

The more you beat on it, the shorter its life alky or not.

Now if you detonate it, life will be real short. The alky will stop it from detonating.. so it will live longer.

100000 miles is 400000 1/4 mile passes. I dont know of any engine that will live that long. Whats Nascar 500 miles. Top Fuel is 2 miles. Put a torch to a candle at it will melt sooner.

My first kit was on a stock turbo car back in early 2003. That car is still getting beat on ever week. Runs around on 235/60 drag radials and is a blast to drive. 22-23 PSI no problem.. since 03.

I will see the track maybe twice a year but will love to have that extra power when needed. Your explanation makes sense and I do understand about abuse on an engine. I will order one of your kits soon...Can Eric reflash the chip or is it best to order another? Also, when my neighbor with the MACH1 stop speaking to me from the thrashing it will be your fault:biggrin:

Where's is your gain knob set at with 22-23 psi and your timing ?

thx

On the stock turbo Syclones, guys have run up to around 17-19 psi on pump gas.
Guys have used alky & ran as much as 27 psi,the stock turbo really poops out @ about 18 psi on pump gas.
The stock Sy turbo record is 11.9 running a lot of meth,a 3500 stall lock-up converter, 4L80E.

Hard to get people to tell you what they run for timing, alky nozzles, control settings, and boost. Its like the old Scantron fill in the bubble test. Copy the answers from the person next to you, only to find out you have a different version of the test....FAIL! Start rich with base timing and work from there. No two alky cars are tuned and run the same.

I made over 100 passes pegging my 30 PSI gauge with Julio's alky kit. 91 octane, 23/21 timing, locking the converter, no knock.

Of course you'll see a huge gain in power from running alky over just running pump gas. If you are comparing alky to race gas, it seems alky has an advanage over race gas because of the heat a stocker produces. As Razor mentioned, the fastest guy went faster when he went to alky on a stock turbo.

Stock turbo or not, one of the biggest gains of alky over race gas is nullifying heat soak on a stock like intercooler. Your sig says you have a FMIC, so thats probably not a big issue. Of course, with alky you can run it on the street all the time and not worry about burning up O2 sensors, fouling plugs, or paying the high $/gallon for race gas.

On pump gas, you can only expect to run 15psi on a stock setup with a stock turbo. On alky, you can run up to 22psi. I'd stay at 20-21psi on a stock turbo on alky if you want to be safe. There is a slight gain up to 22-23psi, but I wouldn't say thats its efficient.

Convinced

1. Okay, Alky is the best next step so where do most of you guys get the methanol?
2. Do you fill the tank before every drive?
3. So if you are low or empty on alky you can drive it, as long as you dont go WOT?

1) read here.. http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/alcohol-nitrous-propane-tech/121500-methanol-sources.html

2) fill tank when light on dash stays on when you turn the key on.

3) you can drive the car to California without alky in the tank. Just dont race it at high boost. Just like you wouldnt race it when your gas tank is on E
