alky injection?

I see this all the time, i have a general idea of what it is and how it works, i understand that it is used basically to increas teh octane (not sure tho) but i was just wondering what it basically does if not that, also is it always used or do you hit a button when you want it to go on like you would nitrous, is it more cost effective then nitrous...basically what im asking is what is the whole idea behind alky injection...?

I just installed on of his kits on my turbo'd 4x4 GMC and it works wonders!

I am able to run 13psi (kind of alot for a stock V8) without a true intercooler and still have 18degs of timing with 91 octane California gas and ZERO knock retard. Pretty cool IMO
