DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp., which issued a shock profit warning last week and has been losing market share, may phase out one of its weaker car brands if sales fail to meet projections, company Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said on Wednesday.

GM's Buick and Pontiac are both "damaged brands" due to lack of investment over the years, and GM is working to correct that with an array of new vehicles coming to market, Lutz told a Morgan Stanley automotive conference in New York.

But if some of its brands fail to meet sales projections, "then we would have to take a look at a phase-out. I hope we don't have to do that. What we've got to do is keep the brands we've got."

Financial analysts have said for years that the world's largest automaker has too many brands to support, even with the gradual phase-out of the Oldsmobile brand a few years ago, particularly with its weaker U.S. sales.

Sales for both Pontiac and Buick have lagged in recent years. But GM is in the midst of a $3 billion investment in new vehicles for Buick, and Pontiac showrooms and they will have four new vehicles this year, including the Solstice roadster, Torrent SUV and the G6 mid-size coupe.

GM, which last week cut its earnings outlook for 2005 by as much as 80 percent, posted a 6 percent drop in U.S. sales for the first two months of the year. GM's U.S. market share fell to about 25 percent, far below its share of 27.5 percent for all of 2004.

Can't they keep Buick around?

What else can they sell to the old people? A Caddy is more of a middle age buyers car now.

That's why I see Pontiac being more vulnerable right now.The GTO hasn't exactly set the world on fire sales wise (the G6 hasn't fared all that well wither) and the Solstice can always be re-badged as a Chevy something-or-other.
But bottom line is this is what happens when you focus your resources on two brands: everybody else gets the same watered down crap year after year.

words turned around, Pontiac is not going anywhere. Per Rick Wagner He is the man ! Lutz is a figurehead at this stage of the game. I did a little investigation as I have noticed we are selling alot of G-6 sedans Turns more pontiac g-6 are sold last month than any dodge/ chrysler car. So I don't Think it's part of the problem. GM's plans to spend 80% of r&d on trucks/suv market and 20% on cars is what I don't like. Hell they pushed zeta back to who knows when sorrry to people who wanted a camaro soon. By the grace of god the solstice just made it into production before they reinserted there head in ash.
Anyone who wants a solstice along with all the first 1000 goddies can call me at work so I can order up yours before friday. We are not marking these car up 1 cent over MSRP like many dealers plan thats crap. GM is keeping the profit for themselves it seems as there is less than $1,000 mark over invoice.
With the performance parts supercharger they already have avalible a 240+ hp 2800lb roadster will be sweet. Now to tell the wife it's time for the eclipse to go.( that may not go over well)

:p

80%??????? On a segment that is at best stagnant??? (we have a lot full of Subdivisions and Tahogs we can't give away right now).No wonder they're in trouble.......

It's sickening to think that the incredible heritage of these great brands (Pontiac, Buick etc) is going down the toilet thanks to the current managment.

TRUE !! they think we can make alot more off each truck/ suv than a passenger car. So they try to make a suv sell when there are 3 times the shoppers for mis size cars WTF I say.......pains me
I will be happy when the gto gets it's 07 makeover the g-6 conv. and solstice are on the table hope we can bring pontiac back !!!
