Need some help putting a value on a sign.
Last fall i put my land up for sale + while i was showing it the buyer stepped on something metal so we lifted it up from under about 6 inches of dirt + pine needles + it was the sign below,(I almost folded it in half to make it easier to carry to the metal pile i was building up from the junk piles that the old farmers had piled up in spots on the land.) but decided i would put it aside + deal with it later, i could tell it was old + may be worth a few bucks or cool to put on my garage wall.
Fast forward to a week ago,I saw an ad on Craigs List for a collector looking to buy old porcelain auto type signs,so i sent him the pic below + he sent me 3 messages since then that went into the spam section + i just found them a few mins ago, first one asking me how much i wanted for it, the next making an offer + then asking me to call him,so i know he wants it + it has some worth,I'm not looking to get rich on it,but i would hate to sell it to him for his offer + find out i gave away, the Mona Lisa of the porcelain sign world, or that Monet had started painting oil co. signs and this was his finest work.
So if anybody can tell me roughly what it is worth that would be great.
It's not in very good shape but the collector offered me $150 + seems to really want it.
Any Knowledgable input on the subject would be appreciated.

Here is the sign. It's 3ft x 6ft This is when i found it it looks a bit better now after cleaning it.

Cool sign !
I have seen signs of this type ( not this design) bring several hundred to thousands. I dont know the company that is on the sign, collect-ability wise who knows. Not a bad offer but may be worth more. If you have an antique dealer close by , take it to them to get their thoughts...they may just buy it.
If it were me I would hang it in the garage. Good luck

Put it on ebay and let it fly. Start it at the $150 and see where it goes worse case scenario it doesn't sell and you wasted. $5-10 on fees

I would also never take somebody's first offer

I'm thinking i should contact the guy that feels his is worth $12500 + see if he'd be interested in it. (y)

I'm actually happy with the offer the guy gave me if thats roughly what its worth, but when i found his e-mails a little while ago it made me think i should look into the value a bit more just in case.
I'll probably just contact him tomorrow and give him a counter offer + see if it flies.

I'd also like any input on what i should ask for this one below. He's also interested in it.

It's all vinyl, with wind flaps so it can be used inside or out.
It's 3 ft x 10 ft with sewn in vinyl ropes on each corner.

put that on a mopar message board i'm sure it wouldnt last long. look up past auctions on ebay

Not trying to be stupid,,, anything you get is pure profit, I understand you dont want to give it away. Double his first offer and see what happens. Good luck

Condition is everything with old signs and they still bring good money in the right crowd even in bad shape. I'd imagine that sign is too rough to be worth several thousand but I'd bet its still worth more than 150 bucks to the right person. Whether you want to make the effort to find the right retail buyer is up to you. My dad deals in this kinda stuff all the time and I've seen him pay what i think is stupid money for old gas station stuff (he runs an old gas station).

I'd love to hang that bf g sign in my side of the dodge dealer I work at but I probably can't justify it. Unless you need some tr parts that I happen to have or something...

I like the eBay idea. Forward the link to your guy and start it at his offer and tell him high bidder owns it. You'll damn sure know what it's worth at the end.

Let me know what you want for the Mopar banner ...neighbor wants it

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies + suggestions.
I got very busy the last few days + had to just put it aside and get back to it at the end of this week.

Cool, I make reproductions of popular signs for myself and various customers and friends to hang in their garages or fences.

I think you should sell it to those American Picker guys.

Those banners were used at major car shows all thru the late 90's. Special Events Performance Series had them hanging everywhere during the Hot Rod Supernationals and Street Machine Nats. They had probably 5 of the wild Mopar colors. Plum Crazy Purple, Sublime Green, HEMI Orange, the bright yellow, and Panther Pink. There might have been more, but a friend of mine got a few in his garage, and I can't remember any others. I'd guess you'd get a few bucks, but nothing crazy...unless you find a guy with that exact color of car.

Sorry Phoneguy, I just noticed your message.

I would take $150.00 shipped .

It's pretty thick vinyl that is folded over all around the edges + then double stitched .
The nylon ropes go all the way across the ends and are double stitched in, there are also grommets for mounting.
There is 2 half moon wind vents in it also,so it can be mounted outside without the wind destroying it.
It's really well made for commercial use + should last forever.
This one was only used indoors at a Bj's store so it's in excellent shape.
