So, in the near future we may have a weekend without kids so I am trying to figure out a cool trip for the wife and I. Doesn't matter if we go during day and come home at night, or stay the night depending on what is going on there. Considered Big Bear, Julian, maybe a crazy Medieval Times meal up in LA or something, etc. I don't drink, so wine tasting tour would be cool where you see all the ways they do it, old buildings and equipment, but would be kind of like going to a strip joint with a blindfold on...

Would be down for a little hiking, sightseeing, etc. Anyone have any ideas?

Palm springs is always fun especially the arial tramway.
many dinner places, ck internet for festivals etc,
museums, car shows, auctions.

Yup...arial tramway in Palm Springs is pretty cool. Nice trails to hike at the top...good food up there too.

...and when you're done with that, dinner in Palm Springs and a visit to the used classic car lot in town is fun. I spotted a GNX there last time we went.....salesman said it was one of the FBI ones...;)

Lee, great suggestion! We have been to Palm Springs before for a church marriage retreat and it was a nice time. Of course, we spent most of one day at the outlets shopping... :( May have to make a return trip to check out the tramway though!

Seeing the FBI GNX may be worth the trip alone. ;) Especially if it is one of the rare twin turbo ones! :)~

Take her to SEMA. :D

Now you're talkin Peter!!! Best suggestion yet, although I am sure the wife may not enjoy it as much as me! SEMA would be killer, would love to go some day to see all that.

We did may a day trip up to Big Bear and had a good time. Rode the ski lift to the top of the mountain, hiked around a bit, took a bunch of pics, then rode it down. There were a lot of guys riding mountain bikes down the mountain after riding the lift up. That would be killer, but the wife thought she'd probably kill herself on the way down, plowing through a tree or something. We may go back up some day with all the kids. They had some cool off road adventure trips from 1.5 to 5 hours with terrain rated as easy up to difficult/serious where you ride a Pingzauer or whatever they are up and down the mountain trails, visiting some old mining areas, etc. I thought that would be really neat.

I used to go to Northstar at Lake Tahoe and take the ski lift up and mountain bike down. It is a blast. Especially since you'd blow a lung trying to climb it at high altitude unless you were acclimated...

We'd average 45-50 miles of down hill in one day each time we went and come out of it wore out and so covered in dirt that we looked like we hadn't showered in months. It's a blast!
They had one downhill on the backside that you could hit 50+mph on...

Redondo Beach has a pretty fun night life, especially when the Red Elvises are playing, but they are out of the country until April.

There are some cool little "boutique" hotels with great restaurants and lounges w/ entertainment, great rooms and as the weather gets colder, some pretty reasonable rates.

Lots of shopping is available for the wife, and bars galore to wait for her in. Or you could shop with her and then relax in one of the bars galore.........

Of course, the beach is always a great way to settle the soul, but since you live in SD, so that might not be much of an attraction to you.

Yeah...... not so sure about jumping out of a plane that is not about to crash on its own... I think I would freeze solid in the doorway. I am not a fan of heights as it is, and not sure if I believe the old saying "you are sooo high up, you don't even get scared of the height"... Not sure I would survive it!

I think I could probably do it....I'm not afraid of heights....but from high places I'm afraid of falling (does that make sense?)....I think I could pull it off tho'.

Now submarines.....submarines I couldn't do....they sink on purpose and that is just wrong....

AGREED!!! Been on one, and would never want to be stationed on one... ever! I need fresh air and sunlight, not hot-racking it and recycled (scrubbed) air. Bubbleheads are a different breed. ;)

Yup!
I was stationed on the USS Midway back in the late 80's....even on an aircraft carrier, my first few weeks were ruff....
I'm a tad claustrophobic, so getting used to the racks and berthing space took some adjustment.
My rack was in the middle of a 90 man berthing, on the bottom against the bulkhead. Several times I had to get up and hurry my @$$ up to the hanger bay to get some air...wearing nothing but skivvies and flip flops...
