I have played for decades but they were crap replica's yet they were better than nothing. Now that I am in a better place in life I want a quality guitar and think I may go with this Gibson Les Paul
....http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Gi...-1960-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar-112549098.gc

I was stuck on Strat's for so long it clouded my view. The body of Strat's I love but the tone of Les Paul's are without question dreamy if I could chose one word and one term. A friend back in high school (guitar class) acquired a Les Paul custom w/gold plating but dang she was heavy and the sharp edging of the body was off setting but the sound was magical and transporting. I have a friend who is a professional musician and he told me one day that my use of a simple kitchen knife as a slide while playing along to Pink Floyd was amazing.

Long past due and keeping the pet's up (howling) is way too much fun.

PS, Best Les Paul seduction off the top of my head....and yes I was at this concert and thank you again Mr. Mushroom :D.

A Les Paul is one HEAVY chunk of wood and you almost need a back brace to play one all night, but you just can't duplicate the sound. Closest I came to duplicating it was with an Ibanez and heavily processed at that. I avoided Strats until about 10 years ago when my brother bought me one for my birthday, and I found out what I was missing all these years. The Strat's an amazing guitar, unless I want that Les Paul sound. My go to axes now are my Takamine 12 string for acoustic, and my T-5 Taylor for electric. Also just bought a ukelele for grins and giggles;)

I know you understand my desire to play again just for that release of energy and expression. In high school I would simply use the volume and tone on the amp and guitar to get as close to the sound of the song I was attempting to replicate. I am "one of those" who just taught them self to find the area on the fret board/string that got me close enough without sounding dysfunctional. I found that the technical part, I know the basic chords, was a tad overwhelming and used as a crutch for some (no disrespect intended). I'm the guy at the other end of the room playing his air guitar. A few of my friends would ask me "why are you crying" while you play?

I am still undecided on the make/model but I am still leaning towards a American Stratocaster.

hello people; I don't know what the question is but I mess around with the guitar and I still suck. I need to play more but with winter coming I will.
But I was shown this from a friend. Go to you-tube and look up Justin Johnson. He plays all kinds of guitar type instruments. I kinda liked the 3 string shovel.
tell me what you think?

Howdy friend! I still believe even the pro's (who ever they are) are still learning and will forever be the student, like in life. I think/believe that expression through a instrument, what ever it may be, is very personal and I get great joy from all. On the rare occasion I am consumed with classical music and the next minute opera, I am a odd duck but there will never be another duck like me (my dad can confirm lol) and there will never be another musician like you.

Play with your heart, share your soul when you play, become one with you musicak instrument and the rest will fall into place. Oh and have FUN! ;)

THAT"S what it's all about!! Couldn't have said it any better.

I listen to a lot of John mayer ( I know he is a douche bag) but he has a lot of techniques from most of the blues players I like mixed into one. Anyway, I believe a les paul is a great guitar for almost any style playing ( Gary Moore to Metallica). But i am also one to know tone is in the fingers.....From both hands. second to that is electronics.

I couldn't have said that better , either.
I love to play, but even after three decades I still suck..... But not as I did three decades ago. I try to play at least 3 hours per week.
Yes , les Paul guitars are heavy , yet have their own unmistakeable sweet sound. My fav axe is a Washburn Wi64 DL -- a very well made, great sounding and easy to play rock and roll guitar. And not as expensive as a Gibson
It has Grover keys, nice humbuckers, solid mahogany body with a set neck, and something called ' the Buzz Feiten" tuning system . ( no matter where you play on the neck, the intonation is still correct.) I used to think it was a gimmick, until I borrowed my friend's les Paul for a couple of weeks. Made a believer out of me.
I use my PC and an interface called "guitar port" to input my tracks, record them and mix them with my fav songs. I found it to be very good practice.
So, if you want a good sounding guitar without spending a fortune, look for a Washburn .... And I recommend the Wi64. There are some vids on YouTube that you might want to check out.

I have never known anything other than cheap knock-offs from the '70s and '80s with shitty string action. Although this hurdle did force me to compromise (expand my way of hearing while getting bloody fingers) I was just be happy that I was jamming!

Gonna just shop around as I am in no rush.

hello people; So did any of you ck. out Justin Johnson? I have yet to try slide but I want to.

When I began using a butter knife as a slide at 3am playing Pink Floyd back in the '80s I was surprised. Surprised that it was almost natural and not as odd as I thought playing slide would be....of course it was the '80s and I was just stopping in to see what condition my condition was in. :D

While we are discussing various playing techniques has one ever just used a quarter out of your pocket as a makeshift pick, its awesome I have also experimented with picking and just using my fingernail as a the pick and often "thumping" the strings with my nail. The variation in rather amazing.

Regarding the Roger Waters video I posted earlier I failed to express how kick ass DBII is, makes that Strat sing he does. For my Houston brothers and sisters I first saw his brilliance playing with the Arc Angels w/Charlie Sexton at the Tower Theater in '92. Before I forget I also saw Peter Frampton with Robin Trower there.
