any hints on how to remove an exhaust housing that's been on a turbo for a while? they always seem to get stuck on the backing plate?

only thing i can think of is lots of lube and heat it up a few times when you lube it so it can really get in there.

could be carbon build up...smack it with a rubber hammer real hard...heat too.

Yep, I've personally seen the "smack with a hammer" approach/technique. it didn't screw the turbo up, you have to do it in gradually and evenly placed "hits" with a rubber hammer. Progressively working your way around the housing to nudge it. Don't sue me if it doesn't work...I watched Dad do it about 16 years ago, so my memory is getting fuzzy. Worked. Turbo was still perfect after re-install. Good luck. WD40!

You might try a product called "Freeze and Release" made by Loctite--I used it on my exhaust mainfolds about a month ago and didn't break any bolts--as a matter of fact after I "broke them loose" I could remove with my fingers... Just a thought

The problem always seems to be the housing comes loose after soe heat & lube, but the backing plate always seems to stick - without a way to free it?

Im having the same problem. I have removed a few before with the bolts counting the turns, but this turbo housing is loose and wont pull off. I dont want to damage the wheel. I will spray with WD40 and see if that works I guess.

this worked on my garret
put something between the bolt and the compressor housing like a screw driver handle or something unscrew the bolt on the exhaust housing against the screw driver handle slowly and do the same on the opposite side same so it comes off straight
