i just picked up a snapper rider with a 14 horse kohler, used it 2 or 3 times ran great went to mow the other day no fire, started checking stuff no juice going to coil, i noticed what looked like a module on the side of the cover and then wires going up under the flywheel.
any ideas ?

What you found sounds like the voltage regulator. The wires going under the flywheel go to the alternator.

The ignition coil sort of works like the crank sensor on your GN. A magnet on the flywheel passes the armature (ignition coil) and generates a spark.

Check all the levers, seats and deck lift for kill/safety switches. Return everything to the *parked* position and see if it starts. You may have to push them in place just to make sure.

i just didnt understand the wire to the coil, we used to race karts and used 5hp briggs all you had was the coil, i didnt know if the kohler had some kind of ignition system or what.

I think the Kohler engines have the ignition pickup on the inside of the flywheel while the Briggs had it on the outside of the flywheel. I agree, check all the safety switches first. I know on my JD, the deck drive has to be off, the brake pedal pushed, someone in the seat, and the hood may have to be closed too before it will start.

Also check the crank keyway. I forget its exact name, but the little metal piece in the end of the crankshaft. If those break, most cases the engine wont start.

HTH.
