Have been running for about 20 yrs. Once competetively, now recreational for stress reduction and weight control. 190 lbs and 6' 2". 20-25 miles per week average. I have been using Asics Gel- Kayanos for a couple of yrs but noticed a premature breakdown or rear foot cushioning at around 400 miles on the shoes. Now, I'm having some deep tissue bruising on the heel of one of my feet causing some pain and interference with my gait. I bought a set today of what I thought were Nike Air Max but the box says Air Burst which I can't find any info on from a 'net search? Can any of you that are active runners recommend a shoe that would be highly cushioned in the heel? I also want cushioning in the forefoot as well. If it matters, I also use custom orthotics for a high arch and pronation. Haven't used the new Air Max yet but wondering if I should have gotten another pair of Asics Gel-Kayanos? Any help would be appreciated! :)

400 MILES.................

400 MILES on your SHOES

I say try some New Balance, mine are very comfortable, but I dont run just walk about 10 miles a week.

Rule of thumb for a good running shoe, is that it can be used for about 500 miles before breakdown starts to occur. Most runners adhere to the schedule of replacement at around 500 miles and usually chart mileage so when to know when to do so.

I did find the Nike Air Burst on a search...... apparently the saleperson at Foot Locker really wanted a sale as these aren't even designed for running although they look just like a cushioned Nike running shoe. These will be going back to the store. What makes me madder is that the guy that sold them to me said he runs track so he should have known better!

Not a runner but New Balance has never done me wrong and some of my friends who run swear by them. If you can get to one of their stores they have really great service and if not their website has a selection tool you can customize based on support/usage needs. HTH.

I pound on my feet too. Ascis are goodbut wear out quikly. NIke air structure is the perfect shoe, but Nike discontinues shoes every few months and you can't find the ones you want. I don't know if the salesman will know the answer, but ask for the replacement for the air structure.
new balance are good.
stay away from Reeboks-they're garbage

for the money New balance is the best running shoe on the market.

i had a bounch of info on the differnt makers but when i moved i lost it all.. i have been coaching track and feild for the last 5 years and have helped a lot of kids with shoes. if you want to know more or have any more question lemme know

Purespeed32d is my aim name and
sleepervsix is my yahoo name
my email is in the profile.

but i will only run on new balance. i have broken both my legs 2 times a peice, and have a rod and 3 screws in the left. i still manage to run a 10.6 second 100m and a 47.2 second 400m. they are the only shoe that make it even remotley comfortable to run in. they have the best motion control and the best upper and lower conscturction on the market. i think they have make a shoe for the heavier runner also.

My Sentiments are with Grim Reaper..

I had 11 Straight seasons of Varsity Track/XC/Winter under my belt in high school (knee Injury took me outta college) I REFUSE to buy anything other than New Balance, ESPECIALLY for a running/training shoe.

As for which particular Model, Grim can be of some help Im sure, but NB's are the way to go!

Rogue,

how did you hurt your knee? the final nail in my college career was a car Vs me issue :)

yea, the 1st 3 times i broke my leg no biggie but the last time was the kicker. they put a rod in my leg tell me it will be as good as new and now every time i take a step it hurts like hell!

so now i coach. i now prove the statment "those who cant coach" true. it breaks my heart to tell my kids and clients to run when i cant run with them. on the same note it was one of the proudest moments of my life when the kid that has A.D.D., A.D.H.D dyslexia, and only 1 mainstream class (P.E.). won the state title in the 110 hurdles. he came a long way. now i thrive on that feeling.

Well I never knew but my kneecap was slightly off a bit... it never bothered me until my senior year hen after a great XC season I was in serious pain running during winter track practice..

so here I am getting a scholarship offer from the local college and the orthopedist checks it out and says "you HAVE TO stop" im like you HAVE TO be kidding....

Turns out the kneecap was rubbing or something, Im not sure cause i was so pissed... he took me out for a month, gave me some exercises, and an uncomfortable brace... I thought the guy was a quack so I went to another, and turns out he wasnt a quack... this one let me go back running though and periodically checked me... at that point I had lost so much time I was very uncompetitive... then in checking me he said "listen you have 2 options here... surgery, or no more competition" As you know surgery has a 50/50 chance of me walkin with a limp forever, plus youre never the same after that... so I am living with it ever since... They said I can run, just no more of this hard crazy stuff... I have a brace I need to wear to do stuff like squats, obviously I lost the college scholarship :(

I guess its better than having a limp... everything happens for a reason right???

Are you from Kenya? If not, why bother? Have some chicken wings...

:D

:D Strike Eagle- Yes, I like chicken wings and ice cream and pizza therefore I must run in order not to be as big as a house.

Grim- I will be emailing you for your personal advice on this subject. In addition to running, I play USTA league tennis so stopping these activities is pretty much out of the question. Anti- imflamitories, here I come! ;)

you can also call me if you like.. i will give you my number if you wanna chat

Update on my medical condition....

Saw the Orthopedist today. Heel pain had continued and had tried all treatments for muscular origin problems. X-Ray and visit today confirmed heel spur. Received a cortisone injection (painful!) in heel area to treatment inflamation. Says I can't run or play tennis for 3 days and should feel improvements shortly therafter. May need another injection in 3 wks. Other approach if it doesn't clear would be ultrasonic blasting of heel spur like they do for sever kidney stones. Who else has had a heel spur and did the cortisone injections take care of the problem?

The first shot didn't do it for me. The second one cured it, but now I'm very careful not to put undue stress on that area of my foot. It is totally painless, yet I now only WALK not RUN/JOG.

My right foot was the one with the spur. I had it for four years before going with the cortisone.

The Dr. didn't hit the spot on the first try.

Good luck! I know where you're comin' from. :)
