Classically trained Drums/Percussion here. 15 years now.
(yes I play the "kit", but also all the other things like the tympani, mallet instruments, etc.)
I have played it all from Jazz clubs, to garage bands, recording studio sit ins, field shows, marching bands, pit playing for musicals and 4 years in a symphony.
Not bad for only 25 years on the planet so far :)
I also play piano, bass guitar, trombone, baritone, in addition.
Someday soon I want to go back to college to be a music ed major.

I play the dual exhaust pipe!:p

Seriously, I used to play accoustic guitar a LONG time ago. Wasn't very good though. Also used to have a friend when I was a teenager that had ALL the instruments you could think of. Basically a band in the basement. Parents were rich and liked musical instruments. So we used to tinker with drums, keyboards, guitars, etc.... playing our favorite (new at the time) Metallica tunes. :)

I play a bunch of different ones - all brass, most woodwinds, keyboard, guitar/bass etc...my parents started me in music very very early
Made a pretty decent living playing trumpet in Jazz/big/show bands in my early days...then I discovered Metal music (and the benefits there of - GROUPIES! :D ) and learned to play guitar & keyboards....made a decent supplemetal income doing that too.
I was always Lead vocal in all the bands as well...a gift from my mother: a pretty voice

Now, after alot of years touring, I got totally sick of the live band/member stuff (and Groupies  ) so I built a recording studio in my home. Making music is alot slower now (one man band) but alot more fulfilling.
One of these days, I'll rip some to MP3 and let some people sample some of my stuff...as soon as I'm happy with it (never).

Same here, I've got a studio forming in the 3rd bedroom. I write simple melodies to expand upon on keyboards, but I'm primarily a guitar/bass player.....one big draw back: I can't play drums and I HATE programming rythym machines, so doing it all yourself does take some real time....

Jackson Professional Series Electric (NOT Performer!)
Upright Roland Electronic Piano ($7000! Glad I didn't pay for that!)
Fostex VF160 16 track digital workstation w/ hard drive and CD burner...and, most important instrument: a big window overlooking the New Mexico high desert!

DCEPTCN:
Did you sound proof and all? When I put mine together i built the rooms (2, one of them still in progress) from the ground up, sound proofing and all. WHAT A BITCH! Double layered 5/8 dry wall - resiliant channel and another 5/8 drywall double layer(same on the ceiling). Rooms are quintagonal. We also built an air trap entry way with dual doors.
My "live" instruments: Alvarez-Yari acoustic and a custom built electric. I run it direct through a POD - what an awesome sound. Better than any I've gotten with mic/amp setups...if you haven't tried it you should.
Mics - some audio techs and some blues...I need more.
All other sounds are samples/synthetics. Roland (2), Emu (2) & Alesis modules. Do all the drums on the mods too...they sound great.
Mixing is done by a midi/digital Mackie. We just got it and haven't really played with it much yet.
I record to PC Via Sonar...so far so great too. I really couldn't ask for a better setup.

For sound proofing, all I've done is to have very 'soft' wall hangings, etc. I record just about everything direct, so this really isn't an issue for me. Although, I am related to some electrical contractors, and they did something for me like isolate the line or something like that (I'm no electrician) and now I have reduced hum and surges wont be an issue. As far as my guitar sound goes, I'm a real geek for old stomp-boxes. I could be lynched for saying this, but I am still in love with my old Zoom 505. When direct recording it has a wonderful clean sound, and when I go through an amp (usually a Marshall VS80 club amp) it has a distorted crunch from hell. As you know, it really depends on what you're playing. I like to tweak strange stuff, like get this: I have an old Yamaha DJX2 which is primarily a low grade DJ tool, (I bought because it was very cheap and can do some interesting sampling) and I've found that if I run my 505 into it's sample/mic port and then mic the speaker (running it into a direct line on the Fostex) I get a dry bluesy tone that the Reverend Horton Heat would approve of. I admit, I'm a real wood-shedder, but what is better than hanging out in your spooky-decorated 'studio' practicing tapping ala Buckethead while watching it rain on the Sandia Mtns.?

P.S. I see you're in Il.-- I went to high school in Joliet, Man y'all got a good scene out there. I had a couple of friends who got signed to Olympic Records in Elgin right out of their sophomore year.
