It depends on the wood being used. It appears that the wood has an open grain. You can use a silica filler tinted with Japan colors (oil) to get the color of the open grain that you want. You can also use analyne (sp?) dyes that are mixed with either water or alky to get vibrant colors. Then add several coats of a compatable top coat and your good to go. Before you do a good piece, practice on a piece of scrap of the same species of wood sanded to the same grit.
