Just wondering if there is good brands and bad for steel caps? Is there a more precision made cap that fits in the block well? worried about walk/thrust bearing trbl. on a 109 block. Looking at a good price for 3 caps from a member, new<cheap>. ...?

New steel caps do not "fit the block" at all, it takes a machinist and a shop to install them properly.

Nick's correct..I did get a set a couple of years ago that didn't have enough meat to fit the block registers, tho. We had to weld the brand new cap before fitting it. And, of course, to make my input to this thread totally useless, I can't remember which company that set came from. :p

All caps are not created equal. you want the best bc hopefully you only want to do this 1 time. CV products carries the brand you want. Pro-gram engineering makes the caps for CV products.
and many of the big names out there, like the general's steel caps are made by pro-gram.

once the caps are fitted to the block it has to be line bored
