Are there any known upgrades available? Maybe a Hot/Cold side swap?

You can adapt a turbo from a 80 to 81 301 Turbo Trans Am. You can find them on ebay alot. The turbo has a .82 exhaust housing, and the wheels are actually larger than an 86/87 stock turbo.

Thanks!!!!!! Thats a great mod, and it should help me get closer to my goal. I appreciate it.

I was also wondering about the actual housings, if they would interchange with a later hot air turbo parts, The EFI inlet/outlet of the 84-85 compessor housing is definitly different then the carbed setup but thats OK for me as my setup is modified and the 84-85 housing would simplify the install. Or if any other housing no matter of inlet/outlet configuration would swap with the carbed turbo? The biggest factor is that I keep the carbed turbo bearing housing, with the carbon seal needed for draw-thru use.

Or if you could point me to where I might find this Information?

The hot air housing won't fit on a 301 turbo, I am not sure about the carbed 3.8's though, I would say no. I thought the EFI hot airs had the carbon seal.

Hmm.... Im going to have to get a hotair turbo to check that.

I heard the early carbed turbos are reffered to as a Garret TB03, which would make the turbo basicly a T3 right?

well theoretically the later 84/85 and the 86/87 should be based off of the T3 bearing center housing as well right? soo with that thought, I should be able to use my current carbon sealed bearing housing with the later 84-87 stock compressor housing, and wheel. As long as the attention is payed to have the assembly balanced after mixing and matching the parts.

I do realize that I could probably buy an aftermarket turbo fitting what i need, but the idea here is to see how far I can go using entirely stock parts, it sounds crazy, but I have a plan!

Thanks for all of your help.

A.J., can you PM me your number again? Since the site came back up and is running again, it is gone from my PM section as is my post on here. I don't work this Saturday and another board member and I may be heading to Alamo to pick up a turbo car that is owed to me for a trans overhaul and maybe pick up a couple 4.1 blocks for Nick in Phx.
