To hook up an autometer mechanical speedometer in my analog car, do I need to modify anything or have some kind of sender or will the speedo cable just hook straight up to the new gauge and read properly?
Can't find anything on this particular question so I am forced to ask it.
Thanks for any info. James

Well, Unfortunatly, the seedo in our car does more than display speed. It also has the speed sensor built into it. The speed sensor is needed for TC lock up and cruise control.

If you want to use a different speedometer, you'll need to get a hall effect sender to provide the ECM with the speed pulse it needs (Caspers has them and they are around $130.00 I think).

On top of that - No, the stock speedo cable will not hook directly into the Autometer Speedometer (stock is clip type, AM uses a screw on).

So what else would I need besides the sender from casper's? And where could I get it. Thanks, James.

the drive cable and the hall effect sender
sender form caspers
cable form NAPA

Then my last question would be do you have a number? Or what to ask the desk clerk when I go in. Do I just tell them I need a speedo cable foran '86 buick regal or something else?
Do they have them at autozone or advanced autoparts?
Thank you for the hwlp.

Just find one that fits the new speedo - all of the GMs connect the same at the trans (screw in)
