Hey Guys,

Needs some help. I would like to change out my stock axles in my 87 GN, for new Moser steel axles. I have ever attempted this before. looking for some guidances. Has anyone ever done this before?

Thanks

It's easy. Remove wheels, brake drums should pop right off. Remove center diff cover like you would change the gear oil. Remove the tiny (8mm I think) bolt that holds the pin in. Remove the large cross pin so you can push on each axle from the outside. Use a magnetic tool to remove the CClips (they fall right out). Axle should slide right out. Good time to replace the CClips if they are worn and also put new axle seals in since that's easy.

I will add that with the cross shaft out, so NOT rotate the pinion. (where the driveshaft bolts) as this will walk the spider gears out of alignment. Not to worry if you do, though, just rotate in the opposite direction to walk them back in. I will also clarify the above instructions to say that after removing the cross shaft, you PUSH the axles IN from the wheel flange, that's how the c-clips fall out. To install the c-clips on the new axles, slide the axles in, use needle nose pliers and slip the c-clip over the groove on the end of the axle, and then slide the axle OUT. Repeat for other side, then slide the cross shaft back in, use locktite in the threads of the retaining bolt, and tighten it down. Put cover and gasket on, lube it up, install and adjust brake drums, wheels/tires, and your done. Look at the old axles and see if there is any wear on the bearing surface. If there is, replace the bearings and the seals. Might also be time to upgrade to an Eaton posi, too.

and a nice new rear end cover with bearing supports as well. cheap insurance imho

may I suggest TOMS RACING AXLES?
About Tom's Differentials

start a new thread or ask in this one. But I hear Tom's are better then mosers, though not as popular! He has the rear end cover too, if you ask nicely he might have a rear end cover with his logo left but I think I grabbed the last one 2 years ago, he might have made more. Goodluck
