Would a MAF that is starting to go south, cause the check engine light to illuminate and stay on?

Okay, so I went to the auto parts store and tried to get the codes read, but the vehicle was "unresponsive" to the scan tool. I guess I will post a new thread in the electrical section about why it won't respond.
