Basic Converter Function?

Can someone explain the basic function and operation of the torque converter. I would like to know what the need is for stall, what actually applies torque through, and what makes a converter more efficient that another. Most interested in NLU applications, and specifically what whould make a converter spool quickly while maintaining a high level of efficiency on the top end?
