I need some ideas on anti-theft devices. Can you guys recommend a good system to put into my T-Type. Sure would hate to lose my new ride and want to protect it. My T-Type also has T-Tops and need some ideas on how to keep them where they belong ! Thanks !!!
Darrell.

A good alarm with ignition cut-off, and several kill switches to various components like fuel pump, ECM, ignition...can't tell you where to place them, you'll have to come up with that...and a anti-theft chip like a Thrasher.

Just to add to the above, add a proximity(motion, radar) sensor and a good pager. There would be no way to get near the car without tripping the warning chirps or alarm and the pager will go off. It's annoying if people walk by it or an animal runs underneath, but we can't have everything.

Hidden kill switch and an anti-theft chip.

Alarms are anoying, and nobody pays attention to them anyway. These things are stupidly easy to break into (I can get into mine with a coat hanger in less than a minute without damaging the window seal), and the ignition systems are simple and widespread enough that a good thief is going to be able to disable an alarm most of the time.

They can't get past the anti-theft in the chip unless they already know about it, which is very rare.

Don't buy a flashy radio, don't leave stuff out, leave the T-Tops locked, and be careful where you park.

One other thing I forgot that actually worked for me the only time I have ever had someone break into my car....I had a police siren hooked up to the alarm which is about 50 times louder than your typical alarm. It got broke into at college out in the far parking lot, the college police couldn't figure out where the alarm was coming from cause they could hear it all over the campus :) Anyway, all they did was get the door open and then fled cause it was so loud..didn't even take the 30 CDs in the back seat. It would scare the crap out of me when I'd accidently set it off.

Dittos to 2quik6,
Another mod to his method is to put the speaker/siren under the dash to where it blasts into the passenger compartment. This is a proven method of deterrence as the sheer volume and proximity of the sound become painful. I posted a few weeks ago that some a**holes tried to boost my G/N but the factory alarm scared 'em off. I only realized it was my G/N 'cause it uses the horn, not those silly little variable alarm sounds that every other car has and you tune out:rolleyes:

AAA opened my car with "Slim Jim" in about 10 seconds.

Try a crank sensor kill switch. ECM kill switch, I only used it when I was really worried and maybe should have not taken the GN there anyway)

There are now systems on the market that work off GPS. So you define a permiter (say 20'), and if the car moves out of bounds w/o your approval, you get automatically called/paged right away. So it's like Lo-jack but you don't need to be pro-active. My understanding is that when you are about to move the car, you dial a number and enter an access code.
When I checked on it this spring, the insurance company still wasn't giving a discount, but they hoped to in the future.
I seem to think it was about $800 the first year, and $150 per year afterwards.
IMHO this is probably your best protection against towing. You will still want a good paging alarm, etc. to help prevent theft of your stereo, etc.

I recently installed a Viper 791 xv with remote paging starter kill etc. My brother-in-law(an ex car stereo installer ) installed it and before we ever opened the box I told him I wanted to make it as stealthy as possible. We installed the brain to the alarm out of the ordinary location (under the column) and did a few other little slick mods that will make the car a lot harder to steal. I want to install a fuel pump cut off switch too, but need to do some research.

on my gn i have alarm/starter kill, a fuel pump kill switch and one of those metal collars that goes over the column. a thumbwheel chip with antitheft is in the future as well. if im out of town at a motel or something i wait till there is no one around and discretely unplug the fuel pump under the bumper as well. so a theif would need to both find the switch and realize its unplugged elswhere too.

i had a clifford 2-way alarm (same as the aforementioned viper 2-way) installed in my gtp a few months ago. its spiffy though im having range problems with mine. the remote wont work unless im within about 10ft of the car  which kinds of defeats the purpose of the paging feature. seems to work good for others though so im sure its just mine and plan to get it fixed. my friend just got the viper 2-way for his mudstain and likes it too.

like aleady mentioned, you need more than just an alarm though.

Thanks for all your input !! I like the idea of the fuel cut-off switch as well as the ECM disable switch. Even so far as a visible deterrant such as the "Club", or something of that nature. I don't plan on being in any "Bad" areas with my TR but then again, the criminal element for car theives are always on the look-out for an easy oppertunity. Just want to make sure i'm not an easy target for the scumbags !!! Thanks again for all your replies and advice !!
Darrell.

I would becareful about how I used a pager. I heard a story of a guy who had one for his home.

The pager goes and he rushes home, the bad is still there and shoots him.

A remote fuel kill system would be great, maybe activated like the road side bombs in Iraq. Guy takes your car and as he drives off and get some distance way you activate the kill switch and he stops, but not too close to you.

This is something that could happen when you are walking into your house or responding to the car alarm. I wouldn't associate a pager with someone getting shot by a thief. If you are that worried, get some really good insurance and don't worry about what might happen. I insured my GN for several thousands more than I paid for it. I don't have an alarm for my GN, but it's not a daily driver.

Your best bet, get a beater to drive every day and drive the GN for pleasure and never let it leave your sight. A Kill switch system won't stop the tow trucks.

That would be what I'd hope for is to get there before they left, cause I'd do the shootin' first. TX has some weird laws about shootin people taking your property if its dark, its a different story if its daylight, but basically if its dark and the only way to safely get your property secured is to shoot, you can.

this is an old post but it applies (although I had to put my little buddy to sleep due to kidney sickness, boy do I miss him!) since then I added a tilt sensor to my alarm to protect against towing.

Friday night my dog (which I inherited whan my mother passed away) wanted to go outside, at 4:00 am. I let him out. After 15 minutes I am wondering what he is doing. Then I hear him barking like he is really pissed. (he never barks) I check the back door, he is not there. Then I hear a diesel truck running. It all comes together in my 4 am clouded mind. I run to the front door to see the motion light on and my dog by the fence having a fit! All this time my 49,000 mile GN is sitting under the carport not blocked in as usual. As I come out I hear the Diesel hoofin it up the street. It was a plain clothesed tow truck trying to grab my TR. Thank god for Caesar the wonder chihuahua. He got extra treats today. Maybe I'll even give him a ride in the GN if I can get him to stop shedding. Needless to say the GN is not at my house for a repeat of the other night. It is safe and sound with the theft deterrants active and cars in front of it.
All TR owners should have a chihuahua.
