hey all
I was wondering who makes a the best passengers side header for our cars. i have been through two new poston headers and i have had it.... they keep cracking right where the larger portion sweeps up to the turbo. My last set i had welded and they cracked in a different spot anyone have any suggestions. thanks

Anthony

Anthony- Can't help but my Postons are two years old and work great. I suspect they changed manuf. Call Tony the tech at Postons and ask outright whats going on. Brad

The best would be Kenne-Bell but you would have to find a used set. I've had mine for 10 years now and no problems. I think you're pretty much limited to what you have unless you look for used headers.

ditto its what ive got too. :)

headers for hot air cars are just not easy to find....Not sure if Ken bell still has them, I know Hooker has a set, and of course Postons. I have a few issues with my postons though, mostely for fit, the up pipe connector interferes with the AC and the other side of it is up against the downpipe. I had to get a shorter belt to get the ac compressor off the flange.

Also I here that mechanical tapping from right about where you say yours cracked. Never even concidered that because they are virtually brand new. Less then 100 miles. I swear if I have to tear out that passenger side header because of faulty manufacturing I will never purchase from Postons again.....

mother F#@$#^#@@#!#!r it took a whole day of cursing and screaming to get that thing in there!!!!!

It may not be cracked but your problem could be leaking between the header and the head, use the thick copper gasket.
The header on #2 has very little area and it blows out the Felpro gasket within a week.
Been there done that

That is what I am hoping, the last time I had this ticking the front of the gasket was completely blown out...Now all I need is a place to get the copper gasket's...

Got the copper gasket from poston's.
But I'm sure there are other sources.
I got my Poston's headers back in 2000,they fit fine except the gasket blowing out.
I moved on to a 87 setup

Use no gaskets or copper gaskets. The factory didn't use gaskets. I've always used red rtv with no gaskets and never had a header leak. Any gaskets other than copper will blow out and burn up in less than a week.

Postons Headers

Guaranteed to be leaking between the #2 cylinder and main log into the up pipe I've had 3 sets and all of them leaked the exact same place

Not trying to jack thread, but I just posted some headers for a hot air setup in the Marketplace setup - wanted to let you hot air folks know and saw this thread...

My biggest issue has always been passenger side header leaks. First with the stock headers that I paid to have taken apart ported and rewelded. They just kept cracking. Got tired of taking them off and rewelding them so I bought the Poston setup (headers and crossover). They did look great and the size of them compared to stock, you could just see how much more they were capable of flowing, however.......
Dealing with my ATR uppipe was the worst part now (which I believe was ATRs fault in design not Poston). Had to deal with it by finding a donut flange gasket to stick where the header and uppipe meet. Should be made so that it was just a flat surface meeting flat surface there like the pipe is at the turbo. This passenger side header also cracked on me a few times. Rewelded and started feeling like I was going through the same thing I went through with the stockers + the additional fun with the uppipe which was a bear to deal with to seal again every time you took it off. [Maybe just to give Poston the benefit of the doubt] one of my theories was that because of the way the ATR uppipe was designed it was putting stress on the header which was causing it to crack. Finally sent the headers back for another set, just to have the same issues before long. At least I had found out the deal with sealing the uppipe by this time
Also discovered somewhere along the way that there was also a leak from the #2 exh port towards front of motor. It seemed that I had finally tackled the deal with the uppipe (with band-aid in form of stupid donut gasket), and the cracking issue (after some of my fancy mega mig welding). Yet another theory based on the previous theory is that this time since I tack welded the crack first while in place on the car with uppipe attached, is that the header was now moved where it needed so not to be stressed by the uppipe anymore. The deal with the leak towards the front however, I never could completely get rid of. Oh yeah, and I was using copper gaskets from day one. I actually tried some felpro's with copper rtv a couple times and got them to seal leak free for about a week, so then it was back to the copper ones.
Not too long ago just to try something different (again) I bought a used set of old Lee Thompson headers, crossover and a TH style 3" 3pc Dp from a board member. These dont look quite as big and nice as the Poston ones. However on this set the flanges are all flat against flat (except at the uppipe to turbo which was like stock; but I cut the pipe and welded the flange so that it is now just like the ATR one there). I bought a sheet of gasket material with the metal in between the composite and made my own gaskets for all connections except header to head. There I went with some felpro's (not sure why), blew them out in a week and stuck my used copper gaskets on. I wish I could say I am now leak free but I still have that leak at the #2 port. I bent the part of the gasket that sticks out a bit, towards the header with a pry bar and it helped to silence some of the ticking but still not completely gone. Other than that the only leak is a slight one from where the DP meets the turbo which you really only notice a bit at start up. Dont know if copper gaskets wear out and I need to get another set (expensive if I remember; been awhile) or I should just try the one thing that I havent and install the header without a gasket at all.
Header leaks IMO are the single most annoying thing about these cars. It is the only thing that I have been beaten at every time on this car and cant seem to overcome completely. Man it felt good for that week of tick free driving with the felpro gaskets on there

I really would have liked to stick with the Poston headers because they really look nice but they wouldnt fit with the LT DP which was definately going on to replace my 3" 2pc DP and ported stock exh elbow. If there isnt going to be any difference in performance between the headers (not sure) then I'll just leave it alone.

Sorry so long

Definately go with no gasket and a little RTV. I've never had header leakage problems. It wouldn't hurt to have the headers surfaced when they're off the car but I've never had to do that.

Got news for you the Postons uppipe doesn't fit either lol.....doesn't fit they're own header, thats just to funny...the stainless pipes are designed for the stock headers so none of them fit the Postons headers. The only uppipe that fits both stock and after market headers is the one from www.jaysgn.com I fought for about a month with that issue, The ATR will not seat and wedging it in is just not a good idea...I even tried to have it bent slightly to make it fit..no dice it split at the weld.

Well i ended up welding it myself so far 3 days no leak i also used no gasket and red rtv no leak and the fit felt alittle beter on the uppipe.

Yes it is between #2 and main log and this is my third header also.

I can confirm that the Poston uppipe does not work with their headers. Been there done that. I got lucky and bought a new stock uppipe as well as a spare. The Jayson uppipe is the was to go. Brad

I use the sce gaskets, but I don't believe that we use any copper ones. Never had a issue what so ever and they come out of the car looking just like they did when we put them on. The issue with after market up pipes is the design. We had a flex exhaust piece welded into our aftermarket atr up pipe that allowed the piece to flex without stressing the passagner side header. The only reason I cracked it this last season is I kind of launched a little hard and landed a little hard, but the wheels in the air did look impressive. We also have atr headers (which I know are not being made) Since putting in the flex in the up pipe my headers had went 2 seasons no leaks and no issues.

Every Poston header I've seen, be it HA or IC'd, was lacking in craftsmanship. The welds were all over the place, pieces of wire on the welds and slag everywhere....I've also noticed that where the primaries meet the "log", they seem to stick way too far in there thus restricting flow.....maybe they have gotten better lately but I doubt it.....but then again what do you do, they are the only ones making them.....for now

You should talk to Lee about making headers and downpipes again :)
