What is the best way to flush the cooling system? I really don;t want to put any commercial cleaners in the system- what is the best way to clean the system? Thanks

i like to use a kit that i think autozone or advance auto sells...

you cut into the heater core line and install a T fitting
then you can screw the garden hose in there... you drain the system and open the radiator cap and turn on the heat...

then you turn on the hose and start the car... flushes everything pretty good with water

i have used this many times on a few different cars and always like the results... you can see the water exiting the rad. slowly become clearer and clearer until there is no green!

just an alternative to all the chemical cleaners out there

Another best way.....

Many times there is more than one "best method".:)

The method described above is one of them and I use a variation of it. I disconnect the lower hose at the radiator. Then remove both hoses from the heater core. Either remove the heater control valve, or make sure it is open, and put the garden hose in the end of it to flush out the block.

Put the hose in one side of the heater core to flush it, then back flush putting the hose in the other side.

As to not using a chemical flush, I fully agree since most have an acid base that is difficult to completely flush from the system. As I have done for MANY years, RMI-25 is installed in all vehicles I service. This is a propritary formula that has additives, plus cleans the system w/o any harsh or caustic chemicals. It also contains a surficant for better heat transfer.

In the summer, RMI is used with just "good"water for lower operating temps, and in winter use it with antifreeze to maintain protection against silicate fallout. [Or the white junk around the tubes!]
