greenhorn here...

I have no way to scan or monitor my 87 GN for tuning and am looking for a way to do so.

What I would like to know is what is the best device to use? Is it a scantool or a laptop dedicated to whatever program is used to monitor and possibly program the system or is it something I haven't heard of yet?? If it's a scan tool-what brand, if it's a laptop- what program should I use?

I have a belief of buying stuff right the first time, therefore what is the best device/setup for what I need? If you can, please provide an apx price and location where I could buy it.

Is there a setup I could get to burn or alter my own chips for a reasonable price?

thank you all in advance,

Victor

IMO

scanmaster is easiest (and best w/out laptop)
turbolink is best (requires laptop)
there is a guy who posts here (b&m computers?) who can sell you a chip burning device...but imo you are better off buying them pre made unless you are well versed in electronic fuel injection type code

The scanmaster is the first one I would get. It is always in the car and always on. Once you start going fast, then you need one that can record data. I like Direct Scan over TurboLink due to the update rate. TL, gets you 1 frame per 1.5 seconds (only 9 frames in a 12 second run) Direct scan gives you 18 frames per second.

I have the scanmaster for daily driving and monitoring knock at the strip, and Directscan for recording the run at the strip.

So you can run the direct scan and the scan master at the same time??

I would like to buy just one that I would be able to use for everything-is that possible?

Depends what you mean by everything...

ScanMaster is probably what you need. It provides a fair amount of data, has some limited recording capability (low O2 and high KR) and is easy to read and menu through when sitting on your dash.

I have DirectScan also, and use it to record runs to see when knock retard (KR) is occurring and what the O2 numbers are during the run. Helps to see when things are occurring relative to rpm and shift points. Nice to see what the chip timing and injector pulse width is at various times too.

But I use the SM for most tuning. The DS to check the tune at the dragstrip.
