BFG Tire size worth it?

I currently have BFG Traction T/A's on my 87 GN and was running into traction issues at the track (obviously) Current size is 215/50R16 (I think) I wanted to go wider with 255 or 265 /50R16 but with the same brand BFG Traction T/A's on the rear. Now will I see any major difference in this? My best 60' is a lously 2.3 due to traction issues. Will a wider tire help out or shoudl I just save my money for slicks/rim combo? Obviously lighter rims and slicks will help out greatly but right now Im running the stock GN rims and wanted to see the best 60' you guys think I could get on sotck rims and 255 size tires. Eventually I will get lighter rims and slicks. What 60' could I run with wider BFG's? Thanks fellas! Heading to thr track this weekend and wanted to see if I should spend a couple of hundred bucks for wider BFG's!
