OK, I just put together an N/A engine with steel shim headgaskets. The block and heads are exactly like the turbo castings so the N/A part isn't really an issue. Anyway, I put the thing together and then noticed that the headgaskets don't have a hole that matches up with the oil drainback holes in the heads. When I look down through the head all I see is head gasket. The heads do have casting reliefs so that the passage is not completely sealed but in order to work the oil would have to pool enough to get up over the gasket material and then back to the lifter valley. I have another set of steel shim gaskets that DO have the proper oil drainback holes so I am not sure what the deal is with this set. And in case you are wondering, the headgasket is symetrical as far as the drainback holes are concerned; it doesn't matter how they are installed.

So, the question at hand is should I just leave them alone or carefully drill a hole through the gasket so aid oil flow?
