Blow-Off Valve

Can anyone recommend a good blow-off valve and where to get it? I have a TA49 turbo. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I was driving the car today and after I left off the gas, for the first time I heard all that air escape and it sounded like crap. I just bought this 87 GN recently. The mechanic told me a blow-off valve would help disguise it

well thats the sound a turbo buick makes.. Most dont run BOV's

The SSQ is great, so are the Forged Motorsports blow offs, and pretty cheap.

But after you get it on, the money you put into it will probably be around the cost of a turbo rebuild. Autos are much less prone to bearing failures than manuals and the blow off could pay for the rebuild if needed.

Most GN turbos die from oiling issues and most GN owners don't keep their aftermarket turbos for very long so the blow off does not make much sense.

I figured this one out after I installed mine and really thought about it.

Fogive me for asking probably a stupid question to you guys, but why would adding a BOV cost me more money down the road. Does it negatively affect the turbo in any way. I'm trying to learn, not very mechanically inclined.

No it wont negatively affect things, nor will it have a positive affect. The point he was trying to make is, the cost of a good BOV is about the same as a turbo rebuild, which btw you wont need because of the lack of a BOV.
The vast majority of turbo's on Turbo Regals enjoy a very long fruitful life.
Many have gone far in excess of 100,000 miles with no BOV.

And to be honest the noise I've heard from BOV's is far more obnoxious than the turbo sneeze ours produces.

BOV's are not a requirement on auto trans equiped cars, plain and simple. But if you're dead set on buying one, it proabably wont hurt a thing. Wont save you anything though either.

i've never heard the turbo snort...it seems disturbing...or intimidating

i was hunting for tial 50mm bov on ebay recently (garrett recommends it). i'd think in situations where revs change rapidly and often (on and off throttle) bov are an asset.

if you don't like the bov whistle, pipe it to the air cleaner. it becomes a recirculating valve, and doesn't make much noise.

The Tial 50mm works great, I have been using one for 1 year now with no problems, reaction is quick and the sound is not annoying. No recirculation needed.

+1 - I have a TiAL as well and have also used and HKS SSQV bov with ZERO Issues. HKS makes a more high pitched squeal [good for scaring the sh!t out of people who throw cigarette butts out the window ] TiAL took me a lil' bit to fine tune but now works perrrrfect. HTH

That looks pretty cool. Do you have to set the blow off valve to a certain setting depending on your psi? Also are there different bov for different higher psi turbos?

I think it works the same as a normal BOV it just reacts quicker because it is a piston style BOV as opposed to a diaphram. I am ordering mine when I have enough funds. They cost about $210 bucks.

I'm sorry I didnt mean to sound like your product was no good. I know you make very good products. I actually had your wastegate and BOV on my Honda (527hp@26psi daily driven) when I sold it and they both worked great with absolutely ZERO problems.

I used their video just to help explain what a BOV does.
