Had a chance to drive a 2010 model, nice ride with plenty of power. Looked online and it looks like a mid 13 second car in stock trim. I really didn't know it was a turbo till I looked at the window sticker, has no turbo lag at all.
I just keep thinking, why can't GM and Buick build a car like this? Just like the GN and Turbo Regal, it's a current mid sized 2 door coupe with plenty of power. Of course, I don't know how many people would buy a Buick with a BMW price tag either. I wonder if the new Opel turbo 4 door coupe rebadged as a Buick be able to attract any Buick buyers?

GM will never be able to compete in the upper market with BMW. It just wont happen. I would still never purchase a foreign car, but nothing GM does will make a car "feel" like BMW, or Audi, Benz, etc, for that matter.

My brothers fiance has he exact car you are talking about and it is just a joy to be in and drive. The tightness of the drivetrain, the quality of the materials, etc will never be matched by GM, sorry to say. It really is a shame.

I love my '08 335, this years have a single turbo with dual exhaust turbines, mine is twin turbo. The older N54 engine is still in use, going into the sport bmw performance model and new M3.

American cars are nowhere near the quality though.

Give it 25 years and lets see how the bimmer is holding up....the GN/TR should be about 45 by then....and still running. I don't know many Engines that can take the tinkering and abuse we give these things and keep on asking for more....after 2 + decades.

The only reason they'll still be running is because guys like us replace every part on them...

Seriously though, GM engines are great and will last a looong time when taken care of properly. Its just the fit and finish of the German vehicles and the quality of materials used that GM cant compete with.

I have been looking into getting my wife a used BMW, talk about depreciation and the fact that the rear of the car falls apart,,, I thought BMW was better than that. Turner Motorsport: Project Cars They used metal that was too thin for the application, I guess that's where GM could never compete with them:) It is crazy to think this happens to cars with just 40K miles on them.

try a quick exercise in depreciation... take a car that's 1 year old, a car that's 5, and a car that's 10 years old, blue book the value of a buick regal and a bmw (take your pick, it doesn't matter) and see which one depreciates more. Look at the bmw lineup, they are sports/luxury cars, and they have been able to afford to make fun and well engineered cars. GM hasn't done anything impressive in years. There are exceptions, which we all love, but it's just that, they are exceptions.

Bottom line, BMW makes a superior car. Especially these days. It is a shame american quality has not made any attempt to keep up with the rest of the world. Bummer is that they are beating us at what we consider our game, capitalism. I spend my hard earned money on the best product, and there was no question that the 335 was the best of what I've seen, for my money. I couldn't beat the 100K mi warranty and free maintenance.

very true indeed. euro cars have always had better craftsmanship but American cars, especially in the 50's and 60's, made up for it thru powerful engines, wide selection of options, awesome marketing, and a model car for everyone in the family available from one manufacturer. i think somewhere along the line GM and other American car makers got away from those attributes in order to keep up with the influx of japanese cars during the oil crisis in the early 70s.

the other day i mentioned to my father that GM should launch a 5 year retro car campaign. bring rwd retro versions of all the old legends ie Regal, Cutty, MC, GP, Nova, El Camino, Malibu, F'Birds, Chevelle, Bel Airs, Parsiennes, Bonnevilles, Catalinas, etc etc. i think that would spark sales for GM. offer 4,6, and 8 cyl versions and in every color imaginable. American car makers spent too much money and time into developing crossovers and SUVs...they kinda forgot about the "Culture" that comes along with cars made in the USA. we never really had superior materials but our cars were fun, had tons of options, and were a huge part of our lifestyles. if GM did something like that then maybe they would have enough $$$ to increase the quality of materials used in vehicles in the future. but as it stands right now...Euro car makers are kickin our a**** in all categories. it would be really cool to see something like a Chevy Bel Air Chezoom roaming the streets in numbers...thats where the future of American cars should go. i dont know why GM hasnt fired allll their designers and hired custom car designers like Foose or Boyd to help with the recovery of the brand....producing these cars in high number would be an issue but it would be worth a shot because the loyalty to American car makers is all but gone.

How do you explain the subframe falling/tearing out the BMW issue? That's isn't quality!!!!
Have you looked at the depriciation of the 7 series? My '99 suburban has lost less of it's value than a 7 series sold in 1999. To each his own but, this thread reminds me of the little girls who have been on here proclaiming how great the quality was in their toyota cars and trucks. HAHA see how that turned out.

Most of them have stupid high car payment so they go around and bash everyone who doesn't drive one...not everyone is stupid enough to have a car payment.

have you had a chance to drive the new Taurus?

This kind of reminds me of my friend. He liked the G8 GT and in the adds and reviews they compared the proformance to a 335, but the G8 was cheaper.
His thought was why get a G8 GT when you could spend a few thousand dollars more and get a BMW that would be better in every way.

If you could spend a few grand more and get a much better car, why wouldn't you?

Hidden costs is a major problem with these high end cars.
Insurance is much higher, maintenance is more expensive and replacing parts that come from Germany. Just going to get an oil change will probably drain your wallet. You're not gonna take it to Wal-Mart for an oil change.

I will admit that these German cars are better, but you can't really compare them to American cars. So we compare a 36k sport compact car to a 36k midsize luxury car... BTW, the first wave of new Regals will be built in Germany. :)

Drive a BMW, and you'll own one. I bought an 02 last year for my wife and we love it. Yes they more expensive to operate than an american car but theres no comparison. I'll buy another one for sure.

Nope, but I've heard they are nice and turbocharged, haven't heard if they are quick though. The BMW was a car my wife got to drive for a day to a golf outing for advertising, so I got a few minutes of seat time to try it out. The first and probably last BMW I'll ever get a chance to drive.
