I have 85 hot air that engine was in pieces when I bought the car. I rebuilt the engine o40 overbore and reassembled. Too much boost. Pegged aftermarket gage. I Bypassed the wastegate solenoid with straight line. Now only ten lbs boost nomater where I Set adjustable wastegate. No leaks no cat. I guess I really need to know if it is feasable to run without solenoid on wastegate. If it is why is it on there. I guess what I really need is help. Any info appreciated.... The solenoid actually bleeds boost off before it gets to wastegate actuator. That way the actuator doesn't see all the boost you are producing thus it takes longer for the wastegate actuator to open the wastegate/puck. Without the solenoid then the wastegate will open at the spring pressure of the wastegate actuator...so stock spring tension is roughly 8 to 10#. The solenoid comes in handy in the higher gears too, because it allows less boost in the higher gears. Do you have the stock "Y" connector installed/installed correctly?? The "Y" connector(this is found inbetween the turbo/actuator/solenoid hook-ups) has a restrictive barb in it that helps the wastegate actuator from opening to quick.
With a basically stock hotair you may not want anymore then 10lbs. of boost. You will definatly want a knock gauge if you go any higher then 10lbs. of boost. If you get some bad gas or its a really hot day outside you could be getting knock on 10lbs. of boost. Don't wanna ruin the new engine!! -Nick

Boost Problems

Nick Thanks for clearing things up somewhat. When I first put this engine back together I Went by the diagrahm on the fan shroud with the vacum lines and the restrictive Y. I have a feeling the wastegate solenoid is bad. Don't know justa guess I don'td know how to test it. However as per your suggestion I won't try to up the boost any more. Sometime in the near future I will once again try the stock setkup with the wastegate solenoid. Thanks for all your help. Bernie Steffen

Wastegate actuator

I have heard of guys testing them by putting air pressure into the one port that recieves boost. By using a gauge on the air compressor you should be able to see how much pressure it takes before pushing the rod out. But, if your like me you don't have easy access to an air compessor.
