This is a stock car with 90K miles. Looks like it may need a head gasket because after I kill the engine a little white smoke continues to roll out the drivers tailpipe (small amount.) Hoping that the motor just needs honing, rings and gaskets.

I am looking to spend $3-4K over the next few years on the engine/drivetrain. What would be the things to start adding? I won't drag it, but I want it to be at least as fast as mustangs and cameros.
 
I would'nt be too concerned about the "white smoke"

In cold weather if I drive my car alot when I turn it off a little bit of white smoke continues to come out of the tail pipes...I have a feeling it is just condensation that is left over in the pipes, and it is being burnt off because the exhaust is so hot....

Check the Compression on the car, and make sure the Coolent and Oil isn't mixing.
 
I'm checking the compression this weekend. Hard to tell if there is water in the oil as this has synthetic oil from previous owner not sure how to read it.

I am tempted to buy the ATR header and down pipes kit but not sure if I should by that for $900 or just buy a set of stock headers that have been TIG welded and add the atr xover and 2.5in downpipe? I'm not after a racer mabey a 13 to 13.5 sec car, fast street car.
 
Well...I don't have any links for a Hot-Air build up...but I am just gonna say what I have had good luck with..

K&N Air Filter $40?
Walbro 340M Fuel pump $100
Caspers Hot Wire kit $60
Adj Fuel Pressure Reg $100
Fuel Pressure gauge $?

After all that stuff is on..its time to make a BIG difference on the "Butt Dyno"

Add a GOOD header system (PS, and DS Headers, and a nice Crossover pipe)

Postons has a nice setup, and it is cheeper (around $575?)...I have had their setup on my car for a few years, and the ceramic coating is still holding up well..no cracks so far. It will give you a nice HP gain because they are bent a little better then the stockers!

If you have the $...go for the ATR set up..I heard they flow great..and there is a NICE HP gain!

THE BIG power adder....A larger Dia. Downpipe!...this will help the turbo spool up, and when you pull the stock downpipe out you will see how restrictive that little thing is!

You might want to Upgrade the ECM so that you can Run ScanMaster2 for tuning the car...great tool to have..and with these cars it is a MUST!!!

With all these mods, and some decent tires you should have a nice low to mid 13 sec car!
