brake lights wont turn off

Pulled my carpet out a couple months ago and realized I needed to replace my floor pans....after I did this the brake lights stayed on..i disconnected the battery....just got the car back...brake light still on...i replaced brake light switch, they are still on...there are 2 connectors on the switch with one or both plugged in lights stay on, with the other one unplugged they shut off....even with the switch hanging down ( not touching pedal) they remain on until i disconnect it...any ideas before I put the new carpet in? its the actual taillights not the brake light on the dash

the switch(s) have to be snaped all the way in and making contact with the brake pedal arm.....the switch is normaly open,and close when the pedal is pused.since the pedal isnt pushing the switch in,its closed/on......the switch you want to snap all the way to the pedal has a orange and white wires on it ....HTH

ill have to look at the wires again, but theres a switch up top that looks similar with the vacuum line, im assuming for the cruise..the one below is the one i replaced...ill try to slide it in til it makes contact and let u know...thanks for the help and the quick response

Gary, I'm a little confused here. If the button has to be pressed to open the circuit then that would mean the switch is normally closed, no?

It is a normally closed switch. I think he just means the switch is open when the pedal is not depressed.

the switch is pushed in when the pedal is not pushed...the resting state is open for the switch......when the pedal is pushed,the switch arm/rod extends and closes the circuit....i had to think about it awhile when i replyed :biggrin: i had my two brain cells smokin....the mounting posistion of the switch in relation to the brake pedal arm will confuse.if the switch is normally closed,the lights would stay on until you hit the brakes....unlike this setup,most switches close when you push them in.....this one is opposite..

thanks again Gary...i understood what you said...hard to figure sometimes when youre upside down looking at something then come to the computer right side up and try to figure it out
