About an hour ago, both north and south directions of I-35W collapsed into the Mississippi river. This during rush hour and just before the start of a Twins game. :(

So far, nobody I know was on the bridge.

HOLY BLAZES!!!

This looks like something AFTER an earthquake or hurricane.

I used to get slightly white knuckle on the old double decker freeways around here; The Cypress in Oakland, and the Embarcadero in San Francisco. I thought they would be a bad place to be in an earthquake, or with car trouble.

The 1989 Loma Prieta quake killed 45 at the Cypress Freeway collapse, and the Embarcadero was a hair from collapsing in that quake, and was later torn down. This reminds me of the Cypress collapse.

That Sunshine Bridge ramming by a ship in Florida was also very ugly. Part of that bridge went in the water, and some cars couldn't stop in time.

Its still a zoo around here. Cell phones can finally be used again and they have already set up alternate routes. Rumors are we wont have the interstate back for two years.

By the way, one of my buddies (has a 1986 GN) was about an 1/8th of a mile away from being on the bridge. Basically, just around the corner. He said traffic was flowing ok and then just stopped. Since he was on the curve leading up to the bridge he didnt see the bridge fall. He said after a few minutes of being stopped about a dozen cop cars came flying around the shoulder. He figured it was just another fenoly stop so he decided to back track a bit on the shoulder and duck off on another road. It was when he got on central avenue (the other bridge in the pictures) that he realized what had happened and then his cell phone began to ring non-stop.
