Broke my driver side axle at the track yesterday. I would like to get some recommendations on what to do.

It is my ubderstanding that I can be up and running again pretty easliy by just putting in some Moser 28 splines, is that correct?

What if I want to run 10's down the road? I would then need c-clip eliminators and/or what else?

I want the car to run 10 eventually but it needs to remain streetable and I heard that c-clip elim's can leak, which I don't want to have to mess with.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Do a Search on the word "spline" with the User name "azgn" and you will find your answer:)

Well, Clayton, the cheapest and quickest fix is to buy a stock replacement axle (I've got a good pair I'll let you have cheap) and pop it in.

Or, you can do as I am doing and go 30 spline Mosers with a 30 spline Eaton posi, welded axle tubes, 1/2" screw in studs(2" long) and a Richmond 3:42 ring and pinion. This setup is legal to 11 flat, but I think it will handle a fair bit (mid 10's) more.

Or, you can do as Woody has done and have your rearend modified (ends cut off and Fxxd ends welded on) to accept non c-clip Fxxd axles. The problem I had with that idea was that you have to change your entire rear brake setup over to Fxxd brakes.

Let me know if you're interested in those stock axles?

There is a flange that several of the rear end parts distributors sell that is the early (65-72) passenger car 12 bolt style, but accepts pressed on Ford style bearings. I will have to dig up several links, but the advantage to it is you can just bolt on the rear drum brakes from a 64-72 A body, 67-69 F body or 68-74 X body. This is what I am planning to do for the 8.5 that is going into my Malibu along with a 30 spline Eaton posi. I put an Eaton in my truck and it awesome! Definitely upgrade to an axle with more splines if you are going to do it.

Hey Lee, I'd be interested in those links if you can dig 'em up. I know Clayton would like to have all the options infront of him before making a decision as well.
Thanks,
Jim

I would personally just buy a set of Moser 28 axles. They are stronger than the stock and you could still use your carrier and c-clips. I seen cars with this setup cutting 1.4-1.5 short times no problems. ;)

I had C-Clip eliminators years ago.

I could never stop the leaks......
If you like launching with boost, then don 't use them........

I agree on the heavy duty axles with clips. If you need more strength go with 30 spline axles and a new eaton posi. Keep the C-Clips tho.

28 spline should be fine for cars running foot-brake launches. Trans-brakes (Trans-breaks) are a different matter.

C-Clip eliminator technology may have improved over the years, but I doubt it.

Currie and maybe Mossier have some kind of new deal for axle retention that doesn't use c-clip eliminators and still uses stock brakes . Give them a call.

The problem is, my car will be hopefully tickling the 10's soon and maybe within a year or so be consistent upper 10's which means no c-clips.

And your damn right, I like to launch with boost ! :D That was definately going to be my hardest launch ever, I had the car set on full kill and was looking for 11.2x or better.

So can anyone tell me the options of getting rid of the c-clips and still being able to drive the car on the street reliably?

I know about the Ford 9" option ala Woody, but what else is there? Surely there must be other options? Does Strange make any setups for our cars? Or anyone else for that matter?

Thanks,

Clayton

If you want to get rid of the 8.5 I know that KTRE sells a nodular iron 12-bolt rear end that was used on Terry Houston's 8 second GN.... just a thought;)

ya don't have to "convert" to Ford brakes with Moser's axle ends...just use A Body backing plates as mentioned.....a really nice, non leak, 10 sec legal setup......but like anything else involved in racing, costs a bit and takes some effort:)

figure $1,500 with new 30 spline Moser axles and Eaton posi......includes all labor & parts

LOL, That's damn near a cool Million $ in Canuck bucks. ;)

So I see on Moser's website they say they have a bolt-in 9" packagefor $820 (which seems like a decent price) so what else would I need over and above what they have listed if I was going to go that route?

Here's what they list in the package:

you do not have to use the Ford 9".......just get the axle ends, axles, and A body backing plates....I use the stock GM 8.5 rear which is every bit as good as the Ford (unless you like to change gear ratios at the track)

find a good race chassis shop...they can set you up easy

if they don't know what you are talking about....move on!:) :)

Okay, I am starting to understand, but I'm a little slow :)

I understand my buddy Jim will be having dinner with You Nick and Jack next week so I'll get him to get as much info as he can from you guys and 'splain it to me when he gets back. ;)

Ford 9"

Clayton,
I "think?" the 9" weights more & takes more HP to turn than a 12 bolt.

Whats the fastest times ran w/t Mosers 28 spline axles and stock posi unit? anyone heard of Mannie Ecker in Ohio? he was running 10.40s using these, also Gene Flury I heard was running low 10s using them as well. I guess as Bob stated above if NOT using a T-Brake then they will hold up pretty well. anyone here Broke one of these axles while racing?

Also has anyone ever tried installing a 30 spline Internal kit in their stock Eaton posi? I know of people that have had 33 spline side gears installed in the new 30 spline Eatons. Just thought that upgrading the internals to accept 30 spline axles would be better than buying a new posi and axles.

Frank

Hey Guys,
Just noticed the new addition to performance recepies over at gnttype.org on Jason Cramers car hes running the stock posi and 28 spline mosers launching 3600+#s w/t a T-Brake and 20#s boost!! running 9.90s! WOW thats got to be the fastest w/t those axles.

I'm currently running a Eaton posi with my stock axles. I'd like to go to Moser 28 splines very soon. My current 60 foot times are in the 1.54 - 1.59 range (the stockers aren't gonna last long!), and am wondering how much the Moser 28's will take. I think the car is capable of going into the 1.4's.
