On Beverly blvd and plam coming our way east on Beverly chp was out there with the dyno machine.

I saw the same thing in my area a couple of years ago. I was on my way to work and they had the street coned down to one lane and were picking cars supposedly at random to submit to a smog test. If they choose your car you have to comply. They had a Honda Civic on the dyno when I drove by. Needless to say they had no interest in my Roadmaster wagon.

There is another type of sampling you might see at freeway on ramps. Typically there will be a sign that reads "survey crew ahead" and there will be a van parked by the side of the road. There will be a laser setup across the on ramp with a reflector on the other side. The survey crew can sample your tailpipe emissions in real time as you drive thru the beam.
