cam sensor adjustment

I'm trying to adjust my cam sensor. I followed the instructions as to 25 degrees atdc and I'm 99.9% sure that it was dropped in at the correct location. When turning clockwise with the volt meter on it I am supposed to stop when it reaches 7.5 volts then turn back till the voltage drops off right? OK I can't find more than 5.22 volts and when I turn it back it falls off to no less than .19 volts. What am I doing wrong?

You are probably ok, the purpose is just to see when the hall effect sensor "goes low", so you know you have found the window. Verify all grounds/connections and and check the battery just to make sure they are good.

I hope so but once I got to this point I tried to start it and got a massive backfire so I stopped for the day. What next?

it's possible that the sensor is 180 degrees out, re-verify that both valves are closed and the piston is at TDC to make sure it is 25 deg atdc on the compression stroke. being 180 out will make the car run like crap.

I'm sure about the compression stroke. I placed the spark plug in just barely then bumped the starter till it shot out. I may have the sensor a knotch out either way though. Can't that be adjusted out though by just turning it a little further either way? Maybe not. It may be a little different with each car depending on the ware of the timing chain etc but when it is where it supposed to be, which dirrection should I be seeing the wires pointing on the cam sensor?
