moving the assembly (not the inner shaft) clockwise will retard the timing, the cam sensor is just to fire injectors, spark timing i would imagine is controlled from the crank sensor.

Im trying to figure out of my cam sensor is too advanced, because sometimes il'l start it, it burps, then other times its fine..
or when i rev with the O2 sensor plugged in its crappy.. if i unlpug the o/2 its alot smoother, but i could still rev it and get a POP now and then, which makes my VDO boost gauge show 6 PSI! .. So I beleive thats a cam sensor problem, would be nice to get more expert opinion on this..
