So if I remove the cam sensor but be for I do mark it and put it back in the same spot I should be good right ?

Mark the base to the timing cover and take cap off and mark the rotor to the housing and take it out but do not turn the engine any , put it back in and line up the marks and you should be on your merry way . I usually take a cell phone pic then you have a backup . plus if you want to get right on the money , get number 1# on compression stroke and set to tdc and then move crankshaft to 25degrees after top dead center and use the Caspers cam sensor tool to set the sensor to the correct location .

X2 on Earls and GNOYNX's responses. I bought a very clean car really cheap cause it "wouldn't start". Turned out the guy removed the cam sensor and although marked it somehow he still installed it wrong. He spent quite a bit of time attempting to fix the issue (throwing parts at it), I bought the car, set the cam sensor and presto it runs like a champ. Take earls advice and just set it correctly of your removing it.

Cool thx guys will do. And I had oil on top of the left side of the timing cover so I was thinking bad seal but think it is my lower intake

Let us know of the outcome and if your engine is running correctly

I will I have a buddy said don't pull it till he is in town guess he has that tool with the light. But I did do my intake and Valve covers and my lower intake gasket was just the rubber no sealer or nothing so maybe that's why it was leaking

The easiest way of re-installing the cam sensor is to set it at TDC # 1 before it is pulled out. To do this remove the cam sensor cap.

Note the small tab on the sensor ring opposite the window.

Note that on the base of the sensor (where the cap mounts) there is an indentation. This is for the key that is molded into the cap.

Rotate the engine over (1-1/8" socket, IIRC), until the sensor ring tab lines up with the indentation in the base plate.

At this point those two pieces (tab & indentation) should also line up with the casting ridge in the timing cover just to the left of the hold down bolt (left side as looking at the front of the engine).

Remove retaining bolt and pull sensor out. As long as the engine doesn't get turned the sensor goes right back in the same position.

Couple of helpful hints:

Put a light coating of grease on the o-ring, replacement is also a good idea.
Can use a large socket (maybe that 1-1/8" one) over the cam sensor (cap removed) to apply pressure to get it past the o-ring.
Swap out the stock bolt/washer assembly for a stud and a SBC distributor hold down (heavy stamped style, not the bent wire style).
