Can chrome plating be powder coated over?

Have some rims that are chrome plated that I want to powder coat only the spokes. Can the chrome plating be powder coated over?

YES!!!

I use to do some powdercoating and I used a powder that was translucent to do a set of chrome valve covers and air breather top. It gave it a anodized look. I'm not sure of the durability on wheels though. I would think it would work fine though. I did some wheels with regular powder and it stayed just fine.

I only want to powder coat the spokes and the inner flat part where the valve stem is, leaving the outer flat area and rim lip chrome. So as far a s durability, it will not be really hitting the elements, and the car is only driven in nice weather anyway, and since its the inner portion, no rocks and stuff should be hitting it.
I took them to a well know wheel restoration place today and they said they could not do chrome, yet when I had called up there a guy said he could...

I would get in contact with someone in your area that does powder coating. I would say it can be done.

Eastwood comapany makes a translucent black that would look cool for what your going to do but regular black would work also.

Howz the GN doing these days? After about 8 months, I'm back in the GN biz again. Ordered a turbo 400 w/a man valvebody and brake and a 4,000 stall converter from PTC today. Billy Duke is doing the setup. Don't know if you've ever noticed how Greg Kring's shifter is set up in his car, but they install a B&M Quicksilver in the console, and it loox pretty nice. Bill's going to put a wideband in and tune it when he's done with the tranny.

I have about 3 miles on the GN1 heads & T&D's, as the tranny blew within 5 minutes of my first test drive, and it's sat since. Very anxious to see how it runs, and nobody around here is better at setting GN's up than Billy. He's the only one that will ever touch that car again...

I went up to Denton a couple of weeks ago. Not alot running, but looks like a nice track, and I might get a few passes in under the radar. Liked the environment better than Kennedale. If you ever wanna go, give me a buzz.

sixnboost, I called a well known custom powder coating place here, Colorworks, and they said they can do chrome after sandbasting it first, but the only way they would do a rim is to do the entire rim They said the masking off the part to be left chrome was too time consuming......so, that means if no one will do it, I guess I have to do it myself...so I'm going to get me a sand blaster for my compressor and a DIY powder coating kit if nothing pans out after a few more contacts.

Hey John, long time no hear from. I don't have your current email address. Going to Redline Saturday to race with the club, will be taking my TTA though. I've been testing a butt load of experimental turbos for Harry for stock replacement on the TTA and various combos for non-stock apps on the GN. Denton is a nice track IMO, some folks don't like it saying they don't prep it much, but I've never had a traction problem there.
Sure when you want to go out there give me a yell, I have a trailer now so I tow my car anywhere now.
Yeah, the wheels are for the GN, I can probably exchange them for some that are bare aluminum and brushed around the lip, but I wanted the chrome lip still with the centers black.

Why not return these rims or sell them and get a set of american racing wheels that already have the black center spokes- seems like it would be alot less money ,trouble and probably hold up alot better.

The black is more of a dark gray and its a flat texture, and you can only get them with the brushed aluminum look around the rim and not chrome. These are the ones you're referring to http://www.americanracing.com/dealerline/blackimages/mega/m105.jpg Its basically the same color as those on the new Mustang wheels.

thats the ones- they would look really hot on a grey colored car.
