I have been working on a buddies car and we replaced the dp. I had him put some new plugs in it and wires. We took it out with the tlink and the maf numbers didn't look right. Well tonight I went back out there and the car ran for s**t. He said he let it cool down after we went and then it ran real bad. I sounds to me like a major miss. When we went out with the tlink he was gettting 8 to 9 degress of knock retard and I told him to let off but he just keep his foot to the floor. I am wondering if it did anything to the plugs? Any thoughts?

missfire will cause knock

if you get alot of blowby out the valve covers might consiter head gaskets but if not then you might wanna start switching out ignition parts and see if you can find it there.

if it has cheap plug wires then they probly crapped out..the only wires and i tried many that wouldnt missfire on my hotair are msd super conductors.

the pass side wires are exposed to alot more heat then they are on an i/c motor.

detination can blow the tips off of plugs... try going to ngk ur5 plugs with gap anywhere from.032 to .035

Well, I talked the guy into putting in some 43ts plugs. We pulled all the plugs and did a compresion test just to make sure. All the plugs were black. I think that the plug wires we sliding off the plugs as well. I went through the wires and shortened them to fit nice and made sure the wire contacted the metal snap ring for the plug. We fired it up and I ran good. I did find out that he had 87 octane fuel in it at that time. That would eplain the knock at 10 psi of boost from my last post. I told him to put some race gas and get the octane up before we look at the maf numbers again.

Heck, I was out in the middle of IOWA and could only find 89 octane and I was getting knock at 8# of boost...I feathered the throttle all the way from about Cedar Rapids to Des Moines and filled up in Des Moines with premium again and it felt good to be able to attempt to pass someone with anything more than 1/4 throttle...

p.s. I had a feeling that if he was complaining about having to spend another $10 on new plugs that he was running the cheapest gas(87 octane) that he could find...If he's going to be that way about the car, then convince him to sell it to someone who wants it and buy something that can run the cheap stuff, like a Honda or a Ford Escort!!!

He says that he puts in 93 normally, but he pulled the insurance off the car so he could afford some work for it. He put in some gas that his father had for the tractor. Thats how that happened.
