Can I take my trans to just ANY local shop for a front pump?

My front pump is just beginning to whine ever so slightly and I need to replace it with a new unit.

I want to buy a new setup complete and have a trans shop put it in for me. Can I trust just any old trans shop with this install or do I need to go to a TR specific shop? I had Coan Transmissions rebuild my trans just over a year ago and they did a good job on it but only updated my front pump and did not see the need to replace it completely at the time.

Or, can I do this myself????

Hey Tom, I don't know if I would trust just anyone. I have heard to many nightmares here to do that. Try Vince Janis in Akron Ohio. he is a great guy and thoroughly knows th GN's and the 200 4R. Look him up and talk with him. It would be worth the trip for you. Mark

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm going to drop the pan tonight and change the filter and fluid on a recommendation of another TR owner to see if the whine goes away. If not, then she's coming out and going back over to Kokomo for a new front pump.

Just a heads up...

but a converter is more likely to whine than a variable displacement pump. Does the sound change when the transmission's placed from Park/Neutral into Reverse/Drive?

The whine is not there when in park/neutral. Only when in gear.

It is what I describe as a "whizzing" sound that is VERY faint right now. But I noticed it pulling it into my garage the last time out and freaked at the sound. I don't want my newly rebuilt trans to get killed by an operator (ME!!!) mistake.....

Those are classic symptoms of converter noise. When you place the car in gear, it imparts a load on the converter's internals and if something's starting to go bad in there, that's when you'll hear it.

Thanks for the tips, Greg! If I have to take it out of the car anyway, I'll have my trans shop check out the converter while it's over there. I love this board!!
