Can you use methanol on An SMC kit

I just bought a car with an SMC kit and need to no if i can use methanol .

i am not one to say ya or nay on that, but i have the old SMC kit...and i plan to use it, i mix marvel mystery oil with it. i was told that denatured or meth works and was told to use the mystery oil, so unless someone on the forum says otherwise i plan to use it. i've put denatured alky through it before though and it worked.

i was going to ask if there was a lub that i can use in my alky kit that i can buy close to home insted of mail order, and saw that you use MM oil in your denaturde alky , how well does that work and how much do you use? thanks terry

This question gets asked a dozen times.. the answer is always the same... you have to call Steve at SMC and ask him directly. There are kits he made that methanol would tear up the pump.. and there are kits he makes that its a non issue.. but you need to get clarification from the source who made it.. other wise its speculation.. and why would you speculate if the system gets damaged.. it can hurt your motor.

Thats why there's tech support on the product, be different if he wasnt around... then we could speculate.

I ran 100% Meth with no lube for years. No problems. After about two years, I felt it was on borrowed time. I used around twenty gallons (four drums) of meth.

System got pulled out of my car.

i would have to go with Razor on this one, how do you get a hold of Steve? anyone know?

i would say i use around a 1/4 cup(the cooking measuring cups) of marvel mystery oil to a galon of Denatured....i don't measure i just eyeball it while carefully pouring it in...then i shake it up really good and then shake it up really good again before each time i use it.

SMC's site says NOT to use lube with the new pumps, as it swells the rubber gaskets/seals.

User beware! Dig deep to find the real info.

Oil=detonation, and bad for the new pumps.

I killed my round bottle pump in one year of using meth with no lube...

Get the right pump for meth before you use it, overtime it will die.

Methanol will cause anything rubber or plastic to swell, just like M.E.K. or Acetone. I would worry about the rubber lining of the feed hose and the o-rings lasting. There is a plastic-ish sheath on the pump body. I rubbed some methanol on the pump body to clean it, and that sheath started melting. Yeah it was cleaning the pump pretty well, but it was taking the plastic with it. Melted plastic floating in the tank and being injected into the engine doesnt sit well with me. Alcohol is nice and gentle on anything rubber or plastic. I use straight alky with Uplon Fuel lube. That stuff is designed for these applications. MM oil isnt. I think the Uplon bottle said that you could use methanol with no worries if you use their pump lube...not 100% sure though.

The plastic tanks have no issues with methanol. The Uplon is only used when a pump that needs lubrication is used.

And the pump has to be compatible with methanol. The pump inside the old SMC kits was not and never was intended to be used with methanol alcohol. Its intention was denatured alcohol with an added lubricant. Dont believe me, call Steve at SMC for clarification.

Once the pump takes a ****.. replace it. Is what it is.

You are very much correct (as usual), my point was that my particular pump that came with my SMC kit, has a sheath around the body that melts when it comes in contact with certain solvents....which would prove what you said about the SMC pumps to be true. Alky is friendly with just about every plastic Ive ever seen.

What is your problem.... I've only been an alkyholic.... for about 7 months.... and I have consumed probably a minimum of 24 gal :biggrin: ...... what's your holdup? :wink:
