So a buddy of mine just bought a grand national
It was sitting for many years, The car makes no power on the boost but shows 14 pounds of boost on the gauge(vdo)
So far he has changed the fuel pump fuel filter mass air sensor coil pack and module plugs and wires
The car seems very lazy
Under boost. It's got a brand-new Reds pump in it
And a gauge at the rail, not sure what it does under boost
And a turbo tweak chip
The car has 30lb injectors
Other than that it's stock, oh drivers side header has a crack
Now with all that any suggestion on what to look for, it doesn't feel like a grand national
Prior to changing to a turbo tweak chip it had a Kenny belle in it and he read those are hot chips with lots of timing

So he took that one out.
And put the tt chip in
With the Kenny belle chip the car felt good but detonated anything past 12 lbs
What do you think ?
 
Do a full throttle pass for 500 yards or so, pull over quickly, shut it off and pull the number one spark plug. Adjust the fuel pressure according to the color of the plug.

The car sounds rich. Leaner is meaner and will produce more power. 14psi won't pull like a freight train but it should feel peppy.
 
Fuel is set at 42lbs,
When it had a bad pump in it, with the Kenny belle, it felt better
Yes lean is mean but the 02 readings are 800's that's fat?
 
If I read it correctly you said the header had a crack? You need to fix that, that is most likely your issue. I have heard it was hard to make much boost with the header cracked though.
 
fix that header, i fixed mine. what a difference. should help narrow down the problem as well
 
What would the cracked header have to do with. The flat power ??
IM thinking valve springs ??
Any ideas ?
 
More about the car. Have a scan tool? How do you know it was detonating? What kind of car do you usually drive...? :)
 
Spool will be really slow...sounds like y'all need to do the spring cleaning via the gnttype site and start slow.
 
Ok so there is a scanmaster
I am told he can see the amount of timing retarted, 4.8 deg or so
After driving it and owning one it feels flat, although it makes boost, 14 lbs or so, under full throttle it feels like there a sock stuffed in the intake, car idles good but gets poor gas mileage like 12 highway
Car has no cat 52k miles
 
He needs to fix the header. Whether it has to do with the issue at hand, it's something that needs to be fixed. Are the valve springs original?
 
I do believe the valve springs are original, the header will be addressed soon, the car specs like this
Stock everything
30lb inj
Kenny belle ram air
No cat
Things changed
Fuel pump reds
Fuel filter
Plugs gapped at 32
Msd wires
New maf kirbans
Fuel press reg 42lbs vac off
Tt chip
New knock sensor
New crank sensor
New coil pack and ign module
He has never looked at the turbo
But the car ran good lean , real lean
 
Where did he get the TT chip from? Directly from Eric? Is it meant for his injector size? There may be other stuff to fix but with the old chip it made power just produced KR.

The old chip Kenny bell ran good under low boost, but when you layed into it, it detonated , it could be heard . So he immediately took out the chip and ordered a tt
Now at the same time since the car sat for so many years, he replaced the fuel pump
Out came 2 Delco pumps and in went in one reds
From what he knows the car was always serviced at the dealer, and all work was performed at the dealer. This must of been a formula in the day chip injectors and fuel pump
The old owner installed a cat at some point when it was needed , by the state, but he thinks the car sat from 2001 inside a barn

Yes, leaner is meaner if you happen to be fat as hell.


...then again ''right is meanest'' doesn't rhyme.




On your car, fix the header, get some valve springs that will keep the valvetrain under control, QUIT beating on it while it's running like crap and knocking.


These cars haul ass in a piss poor state of tune when they're mechanically sound. When they run like crap, it's time to fix the problem, not treat the symptoms.
 
Agreed the car doesn't get driven hard at all ,
Im trying to help him fix the problem without changing everything associated to it
Not into throwing parts at it

If it's knocking it's being driven hard.


You're not going to be able to isolate any problem when you have more than one. As of right now you've got a cracked header that's letting outside fresh air hit the 02 and cause the computer to give false readings, you're venting exhaust energy that's allocated to driving the turbo that's making it lazy, you've got stock valve springs that's letting the valves bounce all over the place without sealing, and the ECM is pissed about something and retarding the ignition.
