ok so what is the secret to remove the catalytic converter.

I have tried for 3 hours to get it off and I can't. Used a whole bottle of wd40, used a dremel tool to cut one slit to relieve pressure. I hit it with a hammer for about 21/2 hours.

I can spin it in circles but can't break it free.

Any other suggestions? Or jsut keep doing what I am doing longer...

Hi ,
Heat is the secret, do you have access to an oxy/acetylene torch? Heat it up real good, then bend the flare by working the cat back and forth. Even a map gas torch should accomplish this eventually. You have to expand the inlet pipe. Well, what do you think?

FWIW & IMHO:
If you are bucks up, upgrading/replacing the downpipe to a THDP & their matching high performance/low restriction cat, raise the car up very high, & remove everything at once.

If you are not going to saving the DP and the center pipes, break out the saw-zall with a new blade. Other than that, heat is the only way.

I removed mine by making relief cuts or "slits" along the cat inlet where it slips onto the stock downpipe. After that, a lot of bending/twisting and it came off.

Same here. If I remember right, there were slits already, we just made them much longer.

I am saving the DP. I jsut wanted to put on a hollowed cat.

I'll just make some more slits in it.

Thanks guys

if thats your plan why bother even trying to seperate?
rod it from the rear and vac it out or run the engine to blow it clean , then reconnect

$200 converter compared to a $20 dollar hollowed one.

Then what am I going to do in a year and a half when I have to smog it...:D

gotcha
was unaware of the other hollowed out conv and the desire to save the original for reinstallation.
even after you get the cat down the neck will be damaged and need some fixing to seal properly with out a welder fixing this will be difficult
if you have access to a welder or a buddy near by who has one just cut the pipe at the head of the converter , not thru the downpipe , youll be able to remove the remaining collar from the down pipe by splitting it .

head to the parts store and get a 2 1/2 -2 1/2 adapter( it will be larger to slide onto the dp ) and a 2 1/2" stainless band clamp ,

weld 1/2 of the adapter to the inlet of your cat , use the band clamp to install the hollowed cat and the next time you need to swap it it will slide on and off with ease and will be sealed so you dont get rejected for leaking exhaust, if you use a std type clamp youll have just as much fun the next time you go to swap it out .

just got my summit catalog of their newest stuff and they have a neat little tool in it

e-z pull exhaust seperator

part # sum-900654 , fits 2 1/2 ,3, and 4" 49.95

no pic on web but its on pg 136 if someone can post it up

edit
eric you and i seem to be on the same wavelength , scary
went to your link and that eastwood e-z pull is the same tool as summit only its considerably cheaper from summit

cats off thanks guys. I jsut cut more slits.

I was expecting it to sound a lot different. Sounds the same....
